Supposedly the Cubs have interest.....I am all for bringing in bullpen arms. He is only 26 probably would take a 3 year deal to get him.

Capps loves Cubs, but market is hotComment Email Print Share By Bruce Levine

The perception that the Cubs have a leg up in signing recently released bullpen pitcher Matt Capps could be just that, a perception. Although the former Pirates closer would love to pitch for the Cubs, upwards of 12 teams have contacted Capps' agent, Paul Kinzer, to discuss parameters of a deal.

"Matt has interest in the Cubs," Kinzer said. "We know they like him, but we'll be proactive in this market. You can' t just wait for one team."

So far it is known that the New York Yankees, Baltimore Orioles, Washington Nationals, Florida Marlins and Texas Rangers, along with the Cubs, want Capps.

The going rate for a pitcher like Capps will be somewhere in the area of $3 million to $4 million. Capps would like a multiyear deal.

At least three of the teams want Capps to be their closer. The right-handed pitcher is just 26 and had 27 saves in 2009.

The Georgia native was 4-8 with a 5.80 ERA in 57 games, finishing 50 for the 2009 Pirates.

"If the Cubs have [serious] interest in Matt, they'll be a top consideration for him," Kinzer said. "But the interest in him in just two days has been enormous."

The perception is the Cubs have no extra payroll money to sign free agents. However, that could change with one meeting between general manager Jim Hendry and his owners.

Jesus the quotes in this article...

Quote:
The perception that the Cubs have a leg up in signing recently released bullpen pitcher Matt Capps could be just that, a perception. Although the former Pirates closer would love to pitch for the Cubs, upwards of 12 teams have contacted Capps' agent, Paul Kinzer, to discuss parameters of a deal.

Translation...
The Cubs are easily played to overpay for a player. Agents know that if false interest is expressed (see the Milton Bradley signing) then they can gett Jim Hendry to overpay.

Quote:
"We know they like him, but we'll be proactive in this market. You can' t just wait for one team."

Is this a sign of a team that cannot make decisions and takes too long to get stuff done?

Quote:
The Georgia native was 4-8 with a 5.80 ERA in 57 games, finishing 50 for the 2009 Pirates

Translation: Not really a winner and allows a lot of runs for a closer. Didn't the Cubs have a couple High ERA closers recently? Shit Greggs ERA was over a full fun lower.

This guy pitched only 54 innings last year. DL time too.

Quote:
The going rate for a pitcher like Capps will be somewhere in the area of $3 million to $4 million. Capps would like a multiyear deal.

It costs 4 million for multiple years for a guy who pitches kust over 50 innings and allows 35 fucking earned runs?
If the Cubs don't overpay him, look for him to make something more like his salary last year... $2.5.

He had a bad, injury riddled year last year DS.

He's a much better pitcher than last year's record indicates.

I expect him to get somewhere close to what Grabow got.

Why?
Grabow is a lefty with better stats and more experience.

The story was written by Bruce Levine. There is not a single quote that says he loves the Cubs but somehow that is what is written in Bruce's headline.

The story basically says, if they have interest, Capps will consider them.

Bravo Bruce! Another unbiased piece of work from "the best in the business".

i posted in the other thread Capps' stats over the last 3 years. If 2009 was an anomaly because of the injury, Capps numbers are similar if not better than Grabow.

It's a big IF though, granted.

Capps has a fastball and a fastball. And he gives up a ton of HRs.

That is not a recipe for success at Wrigley.

Relievers are so hit and miss - you just never know.

I'm just getting impatient for them to do something significant.

You know things are bad when you consider significant signing a dude cut by the Pirates.

the most significant thing they could do to help this team is to stop making significant signings (which thankfully they have).

I'd settle for a few significant departures as well M.O.F.O

He's really NOT a top notch closer, nor even a guy you can rely on regularly to set-up. He gets hit around way too much....no thanks.

Bruce is Hendry jaded! "If you are one of those people that think Milton Bradley has no value, you are sadly mistaken.", this was last month on his baseball show

Matt Capps signed a 1yr/$3.5M contract with the Washington Nationals. He can earn another $435,00 based on games finished.

Bruce had him on Inside Baseball this week, just egging him on to say he loved the Cubs. It did not happen. Bruce was in full on recruiting mode.

I guess he just loved the Nationals a little more...and with all those save opportunities he will have with them, who could blame him.

Keep up the good work Bruce.

As Cub fans, you should be happy that your team is not investing in a guy who chooses to move from the Pirates to the Nationals. I question his dedication to winning.

This is a good non-move for the Cubs. Notice, I say "for" the Cubs, and not "by" the Cubs.
