Yes, if ths guy is decent they probably can trade him at some point with a $5 M a year deal, but the point is knowing your own system. Knowing Brett Jackson is going to be your CF! So sign Damon to a 2 year deal or even a 1 year for $10 million!
I know how high the payroll is and that limits things, but to even spend $10-$15 M more than you wanted to with an eye on winning this year and if didn't work time to move people during the year. Take your savings next year with your young crop of players ready to come up after this year. Colvin, Jackson, Castro, Vitters and then trade Soriano for a bag of balls and eating 60% of his salary.
If the system is really ready to produce MLB caliber players (for the first time in my life) then have a plan and go for it this year, if it didnt work, blow it up.
