First place team with half the payroll. I always felt Dusty got the short end of the stick. Even now Lou isn't taking nearly as much heat as Dusty did for saying and doing some of the same things. The season is far from over so I wouldn't write the Cubs off yet. People wrote off the Sox a few weeks ago and they are right back in it. I can't imagine D-Lee and A-Ram playing at this level all season. Especially A-Ram. I would have bet my life he would never play this poorly.

They were talking about this on the Danny Mac show today. I don't remember who brought it up, but they mentioned how drastically the payroll went up the year after Dusty got canned.

I was saying the same thing here at the time. Hendry took a few years off with Dusty as manager. He got fucking Jerry Hairston for Sosa. Talk about killing the value of a player.

He held on to Paterson and Pie and Rich Hill until they have no value. What he did was criminal.

Bullshit. Backed then you were telling me how much Dusty underachieved with those teams. These teams have played poorly but on paper they are one of the best teams in the NL. We're talking about teams that were good enough to win 90 games and make annual trips to the playoffs. For whatever reason they didn't get it done. Lou is a HoF manager so I understand giving him the benefit of the doubt but how long does Larry Rothschild get to keep a job. He's worked for about the last 12 Cubs managers.

Nope I meant Fontenot.

http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/article/around-the-majors-sosa-trade-is-completed/

1) The Sammy Sosa trade was completed. Sosa was traded to the Orioles for 2B-OF Jerry Hairston Jr. and minor leaguers 2B Mike Fontenot and P David Crouthers. Sosa waived his $18 million option for 2006.

By back then you're talking about late 06 or 07 I'm guessing. By annual trips to the playoffs you know that Dusty only went to one playoff run right? Yeah, he underachieved.

The coach/manager is part of a dogshit team. There is no doubt that the dogshit manager coached a dogshit team to underachievement.
The Cubs in 2003 IMHO OVERACHIEVED by getting to the NLCS but I think they should have defeated the marlins given the situation at the time. They were certainly a better team than the marlins but they didn't have to sack to handle it. I will maintain forever that Dusty blew it badly especially in games 6 and 7 but overall Jack McKeon out witted him each and every turn.

In 04 the Cubs won 89 games. Not generally enough to make a playoff run and they did not. They were not a particularly talentled team and they didn't have a talented manager. So they didn't go and finished 3rd.

In 05 they won 79 with a team that sucked and a manager that sucked.
In 06 they won 66. Manager sucked. Players sucked. Bad bad baseball.

In 07 and 08 the Cubs had a decent team, and won some games and made it to the playoff where Lou was outmanaged, and the players underperformed. The 0-6 playoff record screams management problems.

09... just a pile of dogshit. '10 pile of dogshit.

I know where you're going with this and you're wrong. I'm not racist because I think that Dusty was a lousy manager.

You went there on your own. It has nothing to do with anything. If you read my post instead of looking for someone to call you racist you would have noticed that I said the Cubs teams under Lou were really good on paper and that Lou made back to back playoff trips. Instead you were looking for a reason to claim that someone was race baiting. BTW Lou is a minority too.

Sorry, Uncle Lou, but you're an idiot. If you had bothered to look at a stat pack, you would know that Jay Bruce hits lefties almost as well as righties, so why do you pull Marmol and put in Marshall to face him? I would much rather have Bruce look at a wild nasty slider from the right side than an average slider that he can square up, which is exactly what he did. Lou is so obsessed with lefty/righty matchups that he loses sight of the big picture, time and again.

The 2010 Cubs are on their way to being the *2nd team in baseball history with a 100M+ payroll and 100 losses. Pathetic.

* The 2008 Seattle Mariners had 101 losses and a 102M payroll.

Horseshit. You started off by bitching that Lou isn't taking the heat Dusty did. Why did you go there? What did you mean?
Then you bitched that Dusty didn't get his horses in the next post.
Then the Patterson and Pie post. I agree BTW.
Then you spoke of the 05 and 06 teams.
Then you baited by saying I've said Dusty underachieved with the teams (I'd stand by that). Was your next three sentences about Lou or Dusty, because you're still taking about Dusty as far as I can tell before you switch gears and go wtih the Lou is a HoF manager part.
No where in these posts did you say that teams under Lou made back to back playoff trips.
But whatever dude.
Also I'm well aware that Lou is a minority. I remember Steve Lyons.

I'm sorry you feel that way but none of that was calling or implying that anyone is a racist. Only you saw it that. A black guy must be defending another black guy because he is black. Saying that someone didn't get a fair shake doesn't mean anything other than I don't think they got a fair shake. I didn't think Grossman or Jauron got a fair shake. I was pissed when Skiles got fired. Do you know what all of those people have in common? You know you can actually like someone and it has nothing to do with race? Stop looking for a reason to cry about someone is race baiting. If I want to make a point about race I will. I've never been shy about it.

BTW I was just going meatball for Ryne Sandberg. I don't care if a monkey (Doc Rivers) coaches one of my teams as long as they win. David Duke or Al Sharpton could be the coach or manager for all I care.

I dunno man, I would like to see Ryno succeed and be given the highest probabilty of success. Look man, you don't kill a cow, cut off it's leg and make a steak, you gotta age the meat and then you gotta maranade or what have you.
I really like Ryno as a player; he was always one of my favorites. I don't want the cubs to do what the Cubs do to guys... think Pie, Patterson, maybe even Castro... they put them in the spotlight too damn soon, and they can't handle it. They do it because they're desperate.
I don't want to see the Cubs ruin Sandberg by putting him in as manager when they're saddled with whiney, disinterested aging players who probably really don't much give a damn.

I know Ozzie sat on a bench and coached a base but I truly believe Ryno is more prepared than he was. Ozzie never managed anything in his life. The Sox put a few baseball guys around him and things worked out. I know that doesn't work everyday but if the Cubs are going to rebuild it would be nice as a fan to have a guy on the bench I can get excited about. There is no one else out there that is available that would get me excited. Maybe I feel this way because he was a guy I rooted for as a kid or it could be that I'm also a meatball baseball fan.

I agree with Nas. I also think we both wanted Girardi instead of Uncle Lou after Dusty wasn't resigned.

I'll tell you one thing, I don't care who they get as long as I don't have to read another LaRussa/Duncan to the Cubs post by Elmhurst Steve.
