New York Daily News reporting it as well....and MY REACTION IS...

NO FUCKING SHIT! Like we dint know this was going to be his last year. Now we have a dead end team playing for a dead end manager being Generally MISS-MANAGED by a dumbshit GM.....all being evaluated by an owner who is more concerned with noodles & signs & a ballpark than winning.

Leave now Lou you sleppy fuck!

According to Bill Madden of the New York Daily News, Cubs manager Lou Piniella will retire at the end of the 2010 season.

Probably not the way "Sweet Lou" wanted to go out. The Cubs are 10 1/2 games back in a weak National League Central this season with a disappointing 42-52 record. Piniella led the club to division titles in 2007 and 2008, and he sits 14th on the all-time managerial wins list.

Well I would have been shocked if he was going to be back. Adios Lou!

Lou leaving now accomplishes nothing. He might as well finish out the season, let a new manager start fresh next year.

I dont think this will happen.

But what if Lou starts overusing Marmol?

Im not comfortable with a guy who has no interest in next season, in a year where they are already playing for next season.

This is another bad idea you can add to the list of many bad ideas. Hendry has to be gone too, right? You don't let him have any part of hiring the next manager.....I would think.

Ok, so the season is a wash, the manager is retiring...
Why not just go ahead and clean house now?
I mean, what happens if a salesman turns in a two week notice? anyone, Anyone?

They escort him out of the building so he cant take his client list to a new employer....I don't know if being a baseball manager is a one for one correlation to being in sales....but I see where you are going.

what do you accomplish by keeping him around? You have a half of a season so see Trammel, or sandberg or anyone else run the club. Hendry just wants to be Nice Guy and good ole' boy. Fuck that. Clean house now.

just heard bruce levine on espn and it sounds like it was more for lou. for him not to go out getting fired. Bruce said this way they can actively pursue the next manager for the last half of the season......just not hire him.

fucking retarded. The Cubs owe Lou nothing. The performance on the field is what SHOULD matter, and for the 2nd year in a row, that has not happened under his watch. Just let him go NOW.

This could get ugly for the team and for him./

i don't think there is much to get accomplished for the rest of this year except getting the young guys more work. A manager doesnt need to be thrown into this mess this year. start the new regime when pitchers and catchers report

Im just curious why anyone even gives a fuck...they havent won a thing in 101 years and you're all upset because they arent winning, they're mis-managed, they're fundamentally weak and the GM is inept....THIS year.

Why is this any different than any of the other years? :?

Nooohe is so smart that he will put the non-hitting Fuk in the starting lineup during the playoff's just to a lefty bat. Then, he will have Hendry bring in a lefty bat the next season because that is all they needed. Enter Milton Bradley.

My god, this team is so bad & poorly managed, what can Rickett's possibly be evaluating. You can evaluate SHIT all day long, and at the end of the day...It's STILL shit! Clean House! This announcement pisse me off more than anything, because it just says the Cubs dont care....they are comfortable throwing away a half season of baseball.

Everything that you said...except we have a new owner and hoped maybe their would be some leadership and accountability. Guess not!

A thought for letting him finish the season. Anyone they bring in as interim manager is going to do whatever it takes to win and keep the job....like pitch Marmol every day. This way, Lou gets a graceful exit and all he has to do is follow GM's orders on who to play.

Not sure I want Hendry calling those shots either.

Lou, why strip yourself of any remaining authority you might have w/ 2.5 months to go in the season? No excuse now for the Cubs not to unload any and every asset they've got.

You get someone in who focuses on the future. They are hungry. They want the job next year. They dont have an alliance with D-Lee and other players who are going through the motions. You can still accomplish some things and build for next year and not just fdo the Lou...what are you gonna do....style.

I bet that is the plan. Question is just who will they be able to unload from the albatross contracts.

Lilly....maybe Lee....Silva decided to implode before the Cubs could move him....everyone else will be back next year.

probably get rid of zambrano for a prospect and a bag of ball while also eating a great majority of the contract. Then again the question should be.....who will be making these moves? Hendry should be on the hot seat here on out. I wish we had a mariotti type going after the cubs in the paper every day. Our papers & writers are way tooooo soft

All Silva's recent implosion has done has changed the scenario where the Cubs are back to eating 90-100% of his contract as supposed to maybe 70-80% when he was Cy Silva for a few weeks.

This move is fine. They are giving a 'legendary' manager a graceful exit. Mr. Hendry, please report to the chopping block.

Really no clear advantage to bringing someone in for two months to manage. Who would it be? Trammell or Brenly? Neither one them needs to give it a trial run, they both know the team and managing for two months wont' change their desire to manage next year regardless.

Please no Ryne.
