The Dodgers acquired veteran lefty Ted Lilly, infielder Ryan Theriot, and $2.5MM from the Cubs for second baseman Blake DeWitt and minor league pitchers Brett Wallach and Kyle Smit.

Looks like Lilly may finally get a playoff start in Dodger stadium.

Meh, don't confuse activity with accomplishment. Is Brett any relation to Tim?

This wasn't exactly a salary shedding move. What was it?
Is there a good reason for trading Lilly? I thought he was pretty much better than the other starters over the last 2 years.

If he's affordable in the offseason, there's no reason they couldn't sign him. But he'll probably be asking for too much, depending on how he pitches with the Dodgers. But if by salary shedding you're talking about the long term contracts, then no. I doubt they will be able to do anything with those right now. In the offseason maybe, but they'll have to take some bad money back, especially for Z.

The good thing I see here is that at least we know for sure that they actually realize they are not in contention and not holding on to some unfounded hope. Lily and Theriot were not who I had in mind for them to trade at the deadline, but at least it is something.

What the hell though man. Bakerfontenotdewitt is nothing more than a backup infielder. I have no real problems with shopping Theriot but they basically paid another team to take a much better player in Lilly with little in return.
This means that Lord Fontenot gets more goddamn AB's which is not good.
Man this team keeps guys who do shit for high salary and basically give away someone who was doing WELL for his money.
Todays' goofball trade is more proof that Hendry needs to go. This smelled a lot more like a move for the sake of making a move than it was a good solid baseball decision.

His deal is up at the end of the year and the Cubs are getting prospects in return for him. Makes alot of sense to me. Does anybody know anything about the players they are getting back. DeWitt seems like he is Theriot but 24 years old. Dont know anything about the other two.

This is a good point. A white flag sale. Thank effing GOD that football is back in the fold soon.
It might be time for me to start searching for another team to root for, like I did with the Flyers until old man Wirtz died.

While I like Lilly why would you hold onto a player that you are not likely to resign at the end of the year when you can get a few prospects for him at the deadline? Do you still think the Cubs are making a playoff push?

2B is no worse off now than at the start of the season. Just one of the many holes they need to fill.

I don't get trading a proven player, and eating his salary, for prospects that are still AA guys. Even with good damn luck, they're not likely to be as good as Lilly would have certainly been over the next two to three years.
I'm just thinking Lilly wasn't the guy to trade. I see another bad move here by Hendry. A move for the sake of saying the did something.

I think the right move was to resign him. No. Cubs haven't been a playoff contender since the second week of April. I think resigning would have been the right thing to do for 2011.
My concern is that this hearlds another decade of Dallas Green style Cubs baseball.

Right. That is a concern. There's three 2Bers and they're all two/three on the depth chart kinds of guys.

Theriot is just a guy too. Hopefully that SS prospect they have on the farm is legit and they can move Castro to 2nd eventually. Most 2Bmen are just guys. Not a ton of difference makers at that position. Especially that most people are off the juice these days.

Right. I'm not going to lose sleep over Theriot. I figured he was as good as gone. We'll see what the Cubs do in the offseason. Do they intend to contend? They upgrade Bakerfontenotdewitt. But they're gonna be hard pressed to find a lefty starter that was as good as Lilly.

I think they already have one and his name is Sean Marshall. I think it's time to give the kid a chance. He seems to have learned to pitch over the last two years, last night was an exception, IMO.

Who's your trusty 7th, 8th inning guy then?

That can be worked out in the offseason and September callups.
I thought it could be Kashner, but all they talk about is making him a starter, just like Jeff S. I don't think either one of them are going to be successful starters. They need to be in the bullpen.

Shark doesn't need to be anywhere near the Cubs pen IMHO. He's been pretty terrible each chance he's gotten. Trade his silly ass to the bears.
I agree it'd be nice to get Marshall in the starting roll but he's the only reliever the Cubs have really.
Goddamn it. The cubs are gonna blow for the next couple years. they're still saddled with the bad contracts after this trade deadline and that's bad.

Darko, I am on record here last year saying Hendry fucked this team for the next 3-4 years. Dempster's lousy contract, which I was against, still has two more years at 13 or 14 mildo. The Cub are fucked for another 2-3 years, plain and simple.
It's very depressing.

You got that right.
It's time to cut Hendry's water. I don't see any reason in the world why he should be remotely involved in the Manager decision.

They could ask him his opinion and then eliminate his choice from the running ... that's about it.

Maybe the Pirates will hire him since he's helped make a ton of their personnel moves over the years already.

Unrelated: just heard Rosenthal say that the Yanks are trying to get Kerry Wood .... I have no idea how to react to that, except I guess to refer to the above as a default.

While it looks like a relatively small move let us not forget that Hendry did agree on a trade that was nixed by the leader of the spa/country club that is known as the cubs clubhouse. Aside from all that nonsense, Wallach looks like a big righty with above 1 strikeout/inning ratio. He is in fact Tim's son and was a 3rd rounder last year. He was in the midwest league upon the trade. Smit was just promoted to AA. He is a lanky reliever with decent stats, but nothing mind blowing.

I thought it was a little shady to invoke NTC, but he does own the right to do so. I won't really miss him next year. Hell, we got us some nady right?
