Troy E. Renck has a new article out that says Sandberg is a possibilty for the Mariners. Renck really knows his onions and has excellent sources. Would anyone be surprised if Hendry fucks up the manger search??

Cubs need a manager. Hall of Famer Ryne Sandberg has been toiling as a field boss in their minor leagues. So, obviously, he will be Lou Piniella's successor, right?

Not necessarily.

Two things could derail this plan. For starters, Cubs general manager Jim Hendry would prefer a manager with big-league experience. Not sure it matters at this point if their roster doesn't change — there are too many mismatched parts, a problem that begins and ends with Alfonso Soriano.

The second issue: The Mariners quietly have interest in Sandberg. They could use a breath of fresh air, some accountability, something besides what they are doing. Sandberg, as a player, was the ultimate professional.

He's earned my respect by logging hours in the bushes. That's hard to do, go backward in time after notching thousands of accomplishments and making millions of dollars. It shows a true love and passion for the game — traits that could help any big-league club.

Sandberg going to Chicago makes for a better story. But Sandberg going anywhere else would be better for his health and career.

I don't think you can call 3 years toiling.

to be honest Sandberg in Seattle or some other small market team really is a perfect fit

as much as Id love Sandberg here, I hate to see him crumble to the pressure that others have, and then he becomes just another managerial misfit like Riggleman that ruins his long-term managerial prospects

in Seattle, he is getting big-league experience, while applying his success with young players in the minors to the young players at the big-league level

unfortunately, Bully Hendry wants to retool like he did after 2006 and try to contend again...this is a bad fit for Sandberg, because Bully Hendry has a quick-fix mentality, while Sandberg has more of a long-term outlook that requires patience
