Japan Today reports: Former Cubs player Matt Murton topped the 200-hit mark for Hanshin with a solo home run, becoming became only the fourth player in Japanese baseball history to reach the landmark.

In 2008, the Cubs traded Murton and three other prospects to Oakland for Rich Harden and Chad Gaudin. After the A's and the Rockies, his contract was sold to the Hanshin Tigers of Japan's Nippon Professional Baseball.

Something tells me if the Cubs had kept him, his production would be very similiar to what Fukodome has given them the last 3 years. Only difference is it wouldve saved them 40 million plus.

which executive's wife did he fuck to get blacklisted from baseball? i think the guy hit .250ish in ~100 sporadic at bats as a rockies bench player before being ousted from the majors. if you don't expect much in the way of power, the guy seemed to be able to hit .280 for the most part, which i reckon is much better than many a fourth outfielder in the league.

i've forgotten, was he any good in the field?

also, i wonder what the japanese hits record is... if murton were to approach that there's no way they'd pitch to him. ask tuffy rhodes how that worked out when he went after the almighty oh's HR record.

He wasn't a great OF guy but he was a decent role player.

Typical stupid Cubs fans. Maybe HE made the choice to go to Japan so that he could play everyday rather than be a role player in MLB. Also, he would not be the first player to go to Japan and play, and then come back to the big leauges.

I'm still pissed they treated Murton like garbage...what people didnt realize is, he refuses to give up and is one of the hardest workers u will ever see

he also set a record last year in AAA with like a 40 game hit streak or something

thanks for the update on Murton...i hope he can make it to the big leagues...he is another casualty of Hendry's bully ways

yes, but we shoulda thought twice before we got soriano, because Murton was starting to come into his own...another example of Hendry suffocating the young talent with veterans just because they didnt hit 30 HR their first season ...fuck Hendry the Bully

So hard work and a hitting streak in the minors = MLB success whistler?

Do us all a favor. Get some ice, some antifreeze, and some broken glass. Put it all in a blender and drink a few glasses worth. Trust me, the world will be far better off.

He left the league. So he didn't refuse to give up.
And what evidence supports your claim that he's one of the hardest workers I'll ever see?

Would you people please stop quoting whistler, I have not interest in seeing that drivel and this mult's dumb fucking use of "u" instead of "you" when half of its posts were a paragraph long - I have no idea why it pisses me off so much, but it does...
Anyway, I did always feel bad for Murton because he didn't really have a position on the Cubs. I always thought that he could hit, just couldn't field worth a shit. He didn't have power to be a DH, so there wasn't an American League team that could have employed him, either

Would you please provide us a list of "homegrown" Cubs so that the rest of us know who was really mistreated?

I apologize for this I want to stop responding to whistler but I just can't. His stuff is just too insane. Reading whistler's posts is pretty much like huffing paint. Once you start your head hurts your nose might be bleeding but you start seeing Roosevelt Colvin riding a unicorn and you know......With all of your heart.....that everything is gonna be just fine

Did you mean to refer to Roosevelt Brown? Rosie Colvin was a bear. "Downtown" Roosevelt Brown was run out of town by bully Hendry.

Yeah I realized that after I re read it but figured it was more insane to just leave it as it is. I should really make a Dunkin run.

I read about him a couple of days ago. The article said he was close to breaking some record and in true Mr. Baseball fashion it was questioning if they'd pitch to him so that a Japanese guy would keep the record.

Murton was a busted Red Sox prospect. Sounds like a non-homegrown retread to me
