Bernsy talked about this a couple months back, but here's an article from Forbes about it

http://blogs.forbes.com/sportsmoney/201 ... 10-season/

The Cubs spent 1.96 million dollars on each of their 75 wins this year

Article also mentioned this on the Sox:

"The only other MLB team to fail to reach the playoffs and have a ‘cost per win’ exceeding the league average was the Chicago White Sox ($1.23 million per win) who finished 6 games behind the Minnesota Twins ($1.04 million per win)."

thats what u call the Jim Hendry Quotient

let's define that here:

Jim Hendry Quotient - the disastrous cost per Cub victory because starry-eyed Jim Hendry believes he is the Yankees when he's not

It has nothing to do with the Trib bosses telling him to win at all costs, does it. Dumbass.

Bully Hendry strikes again, he could have kept Matt Murton for next to nothing.

And Larry Himes could have kept Tuffy Rhodes.

If the Cubs played in the Japanese league, they would be a dominate franchise.

did the trib brass tell him to go and pay soriano ~40mil more than anyone else was offering? at least the cubs are now officially on the way out of the soriano contract... FOUR MORE YEARS!

did they tell him to give samardzija, drafted in the 4th round i believe, a signing bonus of ~$10mil that i don't think even 1st overall pick bryce harper got? shit i think he might have even gotten more than strasburg, if not he's not just in the ballpark but also on the field of play.

at least errormiss ramirez will take his 16 mil then walk... hopefully he has a whole year on him, as he played much better with one shoulder in 09. i understand that contract, and lee... and hell even zambrano... but his trading acumen is just so low and his choices in managers have been hands-off big name types, the epitome of steroid era managers... i mean lou gave you a season and a half of managing but once he hit the stretch in 08 he turned into teh "woe is me" thing... i was waiting for a greek orthodox priest to come and bless some holy water... or more magic powder for the baselines.

from there what does the farm system have? what are the mythical 3 or 4 moves that will turn it all around? who's your 1B? only one more year of cock-suck?fuck-you!do-me!! and i mean, tyler colvin needs at bats if you think he's anything other than impaling practice. how much darwin barney are we gonna get? WILL SAM RETURN TO THE FULD AND BE VICTORIOUS?!

the cubs are in at least a 3-4 year crater by my estimations, and it's kind of sad to see cuz whilst i generally do laugh at the average cubs fan and mock accordingly, still, they've had a taste of near-success and now all of a sudden it's like.... "fuck" and that is kind of sad.

when i saw ricketts in those stupid oversized harry caray glasses i gulped and realize this team shall forever continue down its path of insurmountable sucktitude.

The Trib bosses (and I include the likes of Crane Kenny, or whomever the hell the team president is/was) approved him giving that money out. Yes, Hendry is a dumbass for offering it, but it still goes higher before those contracts get signed.

If that happens, it is their own doing. They trimmed $25M by losing Lee and Lilly. Another $43M off the books after 2011. If they don't put that money back into payroll, then Ricketts is pocketing it or using it for other developments. It doesn't have to be that way. But most Cub fans are convinced that taking a few years "off" and waiting for Zambrano and Soriano to come off the books is the right thing to do. Whatever. This is not how teams that are committed to winning act.

While I believe that Hendry should find a new job, I don't recall all this griping about contracts when the Cubs were preparing for the playoffs in 2008.

The Trib opened up the payroll and Hendry gambled that he could buy at least a World Series appearance in '07 and '08. When the Cubs had the best record in the NL and were the favorites to go to the World Series no one cared about the escalating contracts. It was a win now philosophy. sort of like the Blackhawks last year.

I can't blame Hendry for Dempster pissing down his leg game 1 , or the entire infield forgetting how to play defense in game 2, or that Ramirez, Soriano etc decided not to hit in the entire series. Hendry put together a pretty good team in '08 and that team failed him and the fans, unlike the Blackhawks last year.

Could Hendry have used the payroll better? Certainly. The Bradley signing was a horrendous signing albeit the Silva trade has helped the situation somewhat. The Zambrano and extension certainly doesn't look good right now.

But i keep thinking that if the Cubs had won the world series or at least made an appearance in '08 we the fans would much more sympathetic. But again the players failed and now Hendry has to be held accountable.

Not saying Hendry should stay, I believe sports should be a bottom line business and the bottom line is that after 8 years and an increased payroll, Hendry has not been able to deliver a World Series. But I can't get on Hendry to much for spending the money. i would rather see the cubs spend the money that what I saw in the '90s where the cubs acted like a mid market team. Won't resign Maddux but to ease your pain here is Jose Guzman! Big free agent signings? how do you like Jaime Navarro, Candy Maldonado, Brian McRae.

we did have some dummies...including greg hibbard and the Turk

and our farm system produced Bullinger (an apparent omen to a future Bully GM), Frank Castillo, Kevin Foster, Boskie

thinking back to the players we relied on makes me laugh everytime...their names alone are punchlines
