and then hire Dave Dombrowski (free agent GM after this season) to replace Jim Hendry in the off-season.

Dombrowski makes the above deal because it helps his current team win now and his next team win in the future.

The prospect of Pujols on the Cubs roster should make up for Dombrowski having to walk away from his favorite player, Miguel Cabrera.

Dombrowski would definetly need a new job if he ever did something this stupid.

which guy wouldn't do it, Hendry or Dombrowski?

Dombrowski turned down a contract extension to stay on as Detroit's GM after this season. The trade fills holes Detroit has in their current team and then allows Dombrowski to jump back to the NL and a great situation with the Cubs going forward.

Dombrowski started on the South side in the White Sox front office (I think he's from near Chicago) .He's already built 2 World Series winning teams: '97 Marlins and then the '03 Marlins were basically a team he put together. The Cubs GM position would be his last go 'round and would there be a better final act for a GM than to bring a World Series championship to the longest suffering franchise in MLB.

So he would screw the Tigers over in order to possibly sign with a new team next year?

Chances are Hendry and Quade are not going anywhere next season.

You are a terrible GM. First Soria for Humber, and now this?

If the addition of those players gets the Tigers into the post-season and possibly win a World Series, is that screwing them over?

Detroit's done this before:

http://www.hardballtimes.com/main/artic ... alexander/

Turn it around, if the Cubs had a Verlander and Cabrera in their prime, a Victor Martinez near the end of his prime years and needed a left-handed hitting outfielder, a reliable 3B and another reliable rotation guy to win the NL Central and have a shot at winning the World Series THIS YEAR (how good of a shot is debtable)...?

World Series championships don't come easy.

I doubt Detroit would hold it against Dombrowski if he made that deal and it brought a championship to the Tigers.

Heck, they didn't even win the World Series when they traded Smoltz for Doyle Alexander and they're not even po'd about that.

Everyone overvalues their own players, especially their own team's prospects.

Dombrowski stacked up the best prospects his team had at the time (6 of em) to get Miguel Cabrera. He doesn't seem like the kind of guy who's afraid to deal potential for proven.

Humber's had 2 good months. Jeremy Sowers was the best pitcher in MLB for 2 months a few seasons back. Tribe probably wishes they had traded him at the time. Nothing in Humber's career prior to this season supports Humber continuing to be this good. Sell high (Humber right now), buy low (Soria right now).

Aramis is not a reliable 3B and Fukudome always stinks the second half of the season. These 3 players are not the missing pcs to a championship.

That may work in fantasy sports but in real life professional teams are just a bit smarter than that.

Oh, yeah, totally. I mean, spending $40 mil in payroll this season on Rios, Peavy and Dunn is insanely great GMing.

And just how many years are there left on Soriano's contract.

Tigers owner has the cash and he's owned the team for a quarter century or more without winning a World Series. He's close to kicking it, so he'd probably pull out his wallet for a chance (as phantom as it might be) at winning the World Series before he dies.

Recall he gave Dontrelle Willis a big extension without needing to (Willis had years left on his deal) and without Willis pitching for his team. And then Willis ended up on the DL for a few years with "anxiety issues" and never really did anything for them. And the guy also paid Gary Sheffield like $15 mil to play for the Mets a few seasons back (straight DFA'd Sheff, got nothing in return.).

Money obviously isn't concern for them as it is for the Cubs.

Speculation is that they're probably going to end up shipping those prospects to the Mets for Beltran and David Wright (or Jose Reyes) and a starter (Pelfrey, Dickey or Capuano). Dunno if Dombrowski would then jump to the Mets next season as GM. Thought the Mets hired a guy, tho I think they might've tried to interview Dombrowski for their GM job and got turned down by the Tigers.

Dombrowski, whether he goes to the Mets or the Cubs or wherever there's an incumbent GM, would likely just do what he did when he jumped from the Marlins to the Tigers: hire on as President of Baseball Ops or some such bs and then after the first season, fire the GM and manager. Then he takes over as GM and hires Leyland (his current manager and manager of the 97 Marlins) to manage the team.

Tigers payroll sits at $105 mil for this season, down from $140 mil. Dombrowski deliberately left himself that payroll cushion to pick up exactly what they needed at the trade deadline to make a run at the post-season in Dombrowski's final season there.

Actually, Aramis Ramirez might be a good fit for the White Sox for the rest of the season. But they couldn't give anything up for him and he's probably going to want that option vested if he's traded. He'll likely remain a Cub until they buy him out at the end.

He does if someone is dumb enough to vest that option.

Would that really be dumb?
He's doing pretty good this season at the plate. He's probably worth close to that money next year.
