The Cubs are slightly worse but I like the Cubs farm system and $ going forwad. Sox fans enjoy the Oil Cup but please don't reserve a spot at a gas station in Alsip for a t-shirt stand this October.

Joe, I actually like most of your posts but if you think the records of these teams this year matters for the years going forward you're kidding yourself.

If you like having a thin-skinned peter principle dope as the man guiding your baseball ship, than the Cubs future looks pretty bright right now.

Outfielder Brett jackson is probably the best of the minor leaguers on the way. he should make it up to the majors this season at some point. I hope it's before September call-ups. But either way, this is a lost season and it showed all the signs of it back in February, when the GM decided to foolishly go with the crap he had put together...plus Kerry Wood, Carlos Pena and Matt Garza. But it's time to blow it up and build from the foundation on up. The big problem is Hendry is still the GM.

The Sox are not a bad team. They are an above average team who dug a deep hole at the start of the season and have now gotten out of it by the all star break.

If they were above average they would be above .500 after 86 games.

So what you are telling me is that if the White Sox win the next game they are an above average team and if they lose the next game they are a below average team? Is that part of Moneyball too?

Intentionally dense Boilermaker Rick.

Its like an SNL skit.

An above average team would have found a way to be more than one game over .500 Richard.

Are the Nationals, who have the same record, an above average team?

Are the Pirates, who are 3 games above the Sox, an above average team?

What about the 15 teams in the league that have better records? Are the Sox better than some of them?

They've got above average potential but havent put it together at all. I dont think theyre a good team. Theyre pretty much the definition of average.

I thought you were going the incredibly literal route.

No. The White Sox are a better team than that. They weren't at the start of the season. It's just like how even when they had the worst record in the league we all knew they weren't the worst team in the league.

Yes.

While I don't think they've peaked, they've been playing well above average for a statistically significant period of time.

They have won 31 out of the last 52 games they have played. I think that stretch is more evident of what kind of team they are than the first 30 games of the season was.

After just an atrocious start defensively, they are now 2nd in the AL in total defense.
The bullpen has become one of the best in the AL
The offense, while still anemic at times, is still producing with 2 regulars hitting under .230 (Rios) and .180 (Dunn)

Its getting there, yeah. Since going back to setup man, Thornton has been lights out. Santos has been very very good overall, Crain is one of the best righty setup guys in the AL, Sale has thrown better since early May, hell even Bruney has come on and had a few solid outings over the last 2 weeks or so.

Santos has been shaky lately. I think you have to take at least one of those "very"'s out of there.

I don't see the fascination with Santos. He's blown a lot of games in the limited time he's closed. He's okay, but I'd be looking for a better guy.

No, it doesnt.

It speaks to exactly ONE person's mindset.

A person who chooses an 80's one hit wonder as an avatar. Nothing more.

The Sox have done their traditional fattening up in interleague play. Let's see what happens when they get back to playing meaningful AL Central games. If they can keep up the pace they have set in the last 50 games, they should be just fine.

Indeed. We will know if they are for real, or .500 at best by the end of the month.

I think the goals coming into the season were a little more lofty than winning a mediocre division.
