He was pretty clutch in '03.

Let's see....11 minus 3 equals 8. Ah yes....only 8 years ago he was clutch. I remember that.

Aramis can be great, has been great...but he also can be lazy, and has been lazy.... and throw in oft injured, playoff no-show, and old....and I say good riddance!

Yea, kind of a ridiculous statement to make. For a while he was the guy you wanted up in a big situation.

In all honestly, he should be an All Star when you compare his stats to the rest of the dredge at 3B in the NL

I dont think its that ridiculous.

This is like the third time he's gone off after theyve been out of it.

But in 2003,04,05 he got a lot of big hits.

So when the team was good and he was getting big hits later and later in the season it's clutch. But when he's getting the same hits during the same time frame he is now an 'out of it' only hitter just because the team is bad? Got it.

Not exactly

When he slumps for the first 50 games of a season contributing to them being out of it by the all star break, its a bit frustrating to watch him go off in the second half.

In 2006 and this year he was awful in the first 75 games and HUGE in the meaningless second half.

In 2009 he was hurt and played 24 games in the first half.

So in 3 of his 8 years here, he's been pretty worthless in the first half.

Frustrating.

Maybe a better way to say it is He hasnt been nearly as consistent as we would like.

He is a great pure hitter when he is hot. He is also a very lazy ballplayer for the entire season which is extremely frustrating when he isn't raking. He also breaks down alot most likely due to his laziness. He could be alot better than he is but he doesn't give a shit to put in that kind of effort.

2011- Through May he had 2 HR's
2010- Through May he had 4 Hr's
2009- Through May he had 4 Hr's

Combine this with D Lee and every other player that "Needs to get going in the warmer weather" and like this year, you are well below .500 by July and games are meaningless.

Can't have a team full of these guys. It's like watching the Sox in the past who score 1 run, 0 run and then 13 runs and claim they are scoring just under 5 a game, while losing 2 of 3. Winning 1 run ball games is what matters in baseball.

That's certainly true right now with offense down all over and so many one run games being played.

I think that's the big disconnect between statistical analysis and practical reality. Obviously there is a correlation between overall run differential and W/L record, but I think it's probably safe to assume that the correlation drops as more one run games are played.

The SABRmetric view that an out is far more valuable than 90 feet on the bases needs to be reexamined in the context of a much lower scoring environment.

That's a good question. My guess is that the scoring environment would have to be not just slightly lower, but orders of magnitude lower, to make stealing (at less than an 80% rate) a successful proposition. (Of course, there are specific game situations when an attempted steal is the correct call even if the runner's rate is less than 80%.)

He actually declined a spot on the All-Star team to go home. What the hell is that?

it used to be the All-Star game was special

anyone who was voted or selected went no matter what

like everything else these days, the All-Star game has been NBA'd

guys care about being selected but dont care about playing...stupid rules regarding pitchers pitching in the game...guys worrying about getting injured in the game...etc...

funny how all this evolved after the game actually started defining home field in world series...maybe its a rebellion against how stupid that idea was and is

used to be that guys like Sandberg, Ripken, etc looked forward to the game cuz it was a chance to spend time with the other greats, and there was that natural happiness and comraderie that came along with it, which kind of negated the fact the players may have been tired, etc...everyone was always smiles ...and players actually took their own stats in the game seriously but not too seriously...it was always considered a thing of merit to get a hit in the ASG and have some respectable career average in the ASG...now guys dont care as much becuz it's been diluted, etc...

just shows that when higher powers try to mess with something natural and sacred, you will get the opposite reaction...now its only exciting for the first-timers...i hardly ever watch the ASG anymore...as hand-off as Selig is (and should be), I still will never understand his overreaction to a tie in the ASG...

I think it would be cool to see 5 Yankees start the ASG, since they were voted in, but only 2 will...too bad...

I still maintain that SABRmetrics are far less meaningful without the steroids. Players are going back to being what they were for decades. Bret Boone should not have been hitting 400 foot opposite field homers.
