Gillick -- a general manager for the Blue Jays, Orioles, Mariners and Phillies -- confirmed a Chicago Sun-Times report that he might be interested in joining the Cubs' front office in the future.

However, he refuted a radio report that he already had talked with team owner Tom Ricketts about a job, the Sun-Times reported.

"I don't know Mr. Ricketts. I've never even met him,'' Gillick said, according to the newspaper, stressing that he would be interested only in a position higher than general manager and making sure that he threw his support behind current Cubs GM Jim Hendry.

Gillick serves as a senior adviser to Phillies GM Ruben Amaro Jr.

"Any situation that was a lateral move, I wouldn't do it," Gillick said. "I'm happy with the Phillies. I wouldn't leave them to make a lateral move.''

Though Ricketts has insisted he doesn't need a traditional baseball man to be his team president, others in baseball openly have questioned why the Cubs continue to keep former Tribune Co. corporate attorney Crane Kenney in such a key position.

Gillick on Sunday became the 32nd executive enshrined in the Hall and the first GM since George Weiss in 1971.

Ricketts' spokesman, Dennis Culloton, said in a statement: "While Tom respects Pat Gillick's Hall of Fame career, reports of a conversation are unfounded."

A bully with a lot of rings.

I can't stand Hendry, but if this turns out to be a Paxson/Forman type working relationship I'll take it.

Cool story. Whoever is going to be in charge is going to have to work with the Pittsburgh Pirates sized payrolls that Ricketts is going to be approving after some of the last big Trib deals run out.

Steve Stone said today he won't come to the Cubs.

Therefore Pat Gillick will be the Cubs President.

I won't be happy unless they fire Hendry and his goons. Hiring Gillick to "consult" with Hendry is just another half-ass move by Ricketts to fool the Cubs fans into buying tickets. Just like hiring Quade was a dumb ass move, so is hiring a 75yr old to watch over Hendry.

Surely my fellow Cub fans can't be so fa king stupid. Ricketts over Cubin (Strike one) ,Quade over Sandberg (Strike two), Keeping Hendry (Strike three)! Time to jump on the Pirate train like are old buddy Rock.

Juiced I'm right there with you regarding Hendry but I'm finally coming to the realization that it's extremely likely he's coming back. Do I like it, hell no. But if he has somebody with a proven track record of success watching over his shoulder, I'll take it.
