I am not for more statues and I was against the Santo statue (The guy was a bunch of bad luck), but the guy was one of your ambassadors (For good or bad)

Sanberg will be next, then in 10 years Gracie and in 20 years when Roids are legal, Sammy

I wonder if the Sox are going to give Robin Ventura a statue now? Maybe they'll give him the Pippen treatment and only make one of the top half.

I'd go with Ivan DeJesus since he was traded for Sandberg. They also need a Yosh statue. Put it right in front of the garage door in the outfield. I don't care if it's in the middle of the outfield, if Houston can have a flagpole and a hill we can have a statue.

I'm done wringing my hands over the supposed devaluation of sports statues. It's what teams do now. It's an instant success as far as promotions go and it pretties up the environs by recalling Roman times and such. I mean, Karl Malone has had a statue in Salt Lake City for years now and he never won anything. Stockton, too. And yeah, you can say that's the best that sorry-ass Salt Lake City can do and they should just be happy they're building statues of anything other than angels with magic stone tablets, but that's neither here nor there. The greater point is that as long as we're sticking to Hall of Famers or people who should be Hall of Famers if not for unrepentant dickhole voters, there's really no harm done. I mean, Juan Uribe is tangibly immortalized at Comiskey via the big 2005 statue-ish thing. That more than anything should have opened the floodgates for all. Besides, they are, after all, statues of athletes built for decorating government-subsidized private entertainment venues. It's sheer commercialist puffery. We needn't act like these are seriously intended arts projects defacing our fair city. They have roughly the same artistic merit as alabaster birdbaths from the Home Depot.

Ever since this whole thing became An Issue over on 670, I've had my suspicions that all this statue angst ultimately traces back to the Jordan statue and the fact that somehow, somewhere, in the eyes of someone, the fact that Chicago sports luminaries who are not Michael Jordan will have had their likenesses similarly chiseled from stone will devalue Jordan and/or the Bulls while lending capital to teams that are not the Bulls, particularly the two teams who are known to not be embraced by the station's distinct editorial voice (they both air their games on 720, though that's not why). Follow: if Ernie Banks and Ron Santo have statues, they are ostensibly tantamount to Michael Jordan despite never winning anything. If Bobby Hull and Stan Mikita each have full-size statues while Michael Jordan has a statue and Scottie Pippen has a mere half-statue, then the Blackhawks are somehow a superior entity to the Bulls because 2 is greater than 1.5. Obviously, the reasoning behind both of these statements is faulty, but faulty as the reasoning may be, the mere fact that people might arrive at that anyway is just too much for some to bear. We're not going to get to talk about The Jordan like The Picasso or The Lions, it's just another big chunk of rock in the big game of sports-promotional tallymarking. Everyone on the block has the new toy now.

C'mon now,the Cubs just recently started this statue "binge". Nothing wrong with Banks,Williams & Santo. I think Jenkins should have come before Santo, but that's just me.

How can Santo deserve to be in the Hall of Fame and not deserve a statue?

If anything, the Santo statue should have only been the top half.

The Jordan statue is a huge tourist attraction. Buses of Asian people flock there to get there picture taken in front of it. It was the first and most deserved of all the athlete statues. And now it's been pissed on by sports teams everywhere.

What do you think the baseline for getting a statue should be?

If you can put yourself in the argument of Greatest of all time, then you deserve a statue. Otherwise, sorry.

If a team wants to make a "Wall of Fame" or something along the lines of that for other stars in the team's history, that's fine. But building a new statue every year is just becoming ridiculous. Soon guys like Mark Grace or Robin Ventura actually will be considered for statues, and that's just dumb.

I would say that, at least for franchises with a long history, being one of the best in franchise history should be enough to merit a statue. I don't think there's any problem with guys like Frank and Ernie having statues. I probably wouldn't build one for guys like Williams, Minoso, Santo or Baines, but I don't think it's anything to get worked up about. They're no different than Enos Slaughter and I never heard anyone complain about his statue.

The Haray Caray statue is (or at least was) a big tourist attraction as well. I think that one is good because the guy was a legend and was one of the biggest reasons that the Cubs started to draw 2 and 3 million fans pretty regularly thru the 80s and 90s

MJ, Scottie, Frank Thomas, Ernie Banks, Harry Caray....those are all fine. Some of the other Sox ones I guess I don't have too much of a problem with because at least they are inside the park. If they start putting a bunch of them outside I think gets to be too cluttered.

That's because Cardinals fans are psychologically incapable of constructing thoughts remotely critical of the Cardinals.

Seriously, it's just crap around an arena. It's not art. The existence of athlete statues doesn't diminish anything Michael Jordan did. It's stuff you walk past in a parking lot or a concourse and if you're lucky you won't bump into it. Don't sweat the small stuff. I don't care if the Chicago Wolves build a statue of Steve Maltais beside the Rosemont Horizon parking kiosk.

Why do they not just get it over with and build a statue of every player on the 1969 Cubs.

I can never understand the bizarre fascination with this collection of horrible losers. Go ahead, name another city where such a massive choke job would be so romanticized. Look at the Boston Red Sox. In 1978, they had a 14 1/2 game lead in July and blew it (laugh out loud). Do you hear any chowderheads speaking warmly about that season? No, you do not. Then again, The Boston Red Sox did not have Mike Murphy blowing bugles in the bleachers.

Did Ronnie Woo reek of alcohol and urine? I look at a picture of him and those odors literally fill my nostrils.
