According to Buster Olney of ESPN.com, Carlos Pena was claimed off waivers by an unknown team.

$6M left on his deal. Get a broken armed reliever or just let him go.

Would they be on the hook for the 5M payable next year too? If so they have to let him go.

No, if they just let the claim go through the money he's owed next season is on the new team.

Pena is owed about $1M for the rest of the year and projects as a Type B free agent this winter. The Cubs will be on the hook for a deferred $5M in January even if they deal him.

I'm not sure why the Cubs are on the hook for the deferred money but if it's true then this changes things. If they can't negotiate the claiming team into taking the entire sum then they should get a decent prospect in return.

Can they get back Geronimo Pena?

Wonder why that is, interesting. Guess it makes sense though, or else teams probably wouldn't have claimed him.

hard to believe

everytime I see him play, he hits...not only that, the hits he gets are clutch hits/homeruns...hard to believe he's only hitting .223...despite the low average, his power numbers are up there

i bashed the signing, but he actually turned out to be worth it...dont forget the excellent defense and the errors/runs he's saved in the infield

The $5M would still be the Cubs because even though it was deferred, it was still salary for the time he played with the Cubs.

Well if it was a standard $10MM contract, the claiming team would be on the hook for the remainder. No doubt they should be on the hook for every game he has played this year, but why is the $5MM he isn't paid until next year applied? Or at least divided between the Cubs and new team based on his time playing for each. Just odd the Cubs are on the hook for all $5MM.

Ok, NVM it's at least pro-rated.

Ken_Rosenthal Ken Rosenthal
#Cubs' Pena has 5M deferred, payable 1/12. If trade occurred, Cubs would pay pro-rated portion - almost all. Again, deal unlikely. #MLB

Who is going to select the player(s) in return? Crane Kenney and Randy Bush tag team effort? They won't get a damn thing for him so there is really no point. He needs to stick around for now to be the good voice in Castro's ear.

I hate to say this but it really and truly doesn't matter if he stays or if he goes now. If he goes there will be trouble.....But if he stays there will be double.

The Yankees claimed Pena, according to Jon Heyman of SI.com.

This just got interesting again.

If they can't get the other team to take on the 5 mildo, just keep him and see if you can work out a new deal. They're not gonna pay for Fielder or PooHoles, so what's the point of getting rid of him.

Randy Bush is not going to pry shit away from Cashman if there is a deal. Keep him.

the guy should not have been signed in the first place..dump him now..his signing equals throwing ten million in the garbage, made no sense whatsoever..i would have put soriano or colvin @ first and saved ten million

Let him go. So what if he has hit a few homers and played some d. Let him go for nothing as far as I'm concerned. Save the 1M or whatever.

That depends entirely upon whether the Yankees (if reports are accurate and it is the Yankees) will offer a decent prospect for Pena. If so, I make the deal. If it just saves the team a million dollars or so of salary, then it would only make sense if they want to move Colvin to 1st base when they call up Brett Jackson. That way both players could get everyday playing time in September.
