Epstein 'On Cusp' Of Deal With Cubs
By Ben Nicholson-Smith [October 11 at 5:44pm CST]
Boston GM Theo Epstein is "on the cusp" of leaving the Red Sox for a job with the Cubs, according to Steve Buckley of the Boston Herald. Red Sox ownership still hopes to retain Epstein and if he is to leave, Boston will demand "something real" as compensation

It's amazing that 100% of Cub fans think that Theo Epstein is the savior and will definitely win a World Series here.

I am 100% certain Theo Epstien is the savior of the Cubs franchise and will bring multiple World Series titles to the North Side.

MLB network says it's close to happening.

This is great. Theo will do everything right. Cubs will eventually have a good team. They'll have a 3 year window of winning a World Series. They'll fail in the playoffs each of those years cuz it's baseball. Shit happens in the playoffs. Espstein will leave and you'll hire the next golden boy. Remember, Andy McFail was held in the same regard as Theo when the Cubs hired him.

MLB network said Ryno might be the manager. I'm not sure if they were joking.

Since this sounds like it is probably happening I wonder what the compensation is going to be? I would give them Byrd and take Lackey off their hands.

If Ryno comes with Epstein, I'd really like that as I think Ryno will make a very good manager.

Of course you do. Ryno is great. Theo is great. Everything is great. Will the win a World Series? No. They'll be here for 5 or 6 years and then they'll leave. After that they'll hire a new GM and Manager with great credentials and everybody will say it's great. Then those guys won't win a World Series.

I'm kind of hoping for Theo to fail cuz I'm sick of hearing the hype about him and I don't think he's the genious that everybody says. He had a huge payroll in Boston and he relied on at least 2 steroid guys to win 2 World Series (Manny and Ortiz).

Key statement right there.

This is incorrect. I'm a Cub fan, and I don't consider him a savior. I'm very excited about this possible move, and believe he's a great fit. I'm not sure why fans of an organization being positive about something has to mean he's a savior, and will definitely win a World Series.

Steroids are banned now. He won't have the open check book that he had in Boston

These are also key statements.

If he gets rid of Soriano and Zambrano, I would be happy with that.

If he does win a WS with the Cubs (though unlikely), it will make him the greatest GM in the history of baseball.

People say that cuz it's the Cubs and Red Sox. It's still just two baseball teams. The actual GMing is the same in these places as winning in other places.

Kenny Williams won with a team that had a longer drought than the Red Sox. If he now won with the Cubs nobody would say he's the greatest GM.

That's the thing that always makes me laugh. Nobody ever recognizes that the Sox were a long time loser just like the Red Sox and Cubs.

Actually, if Kenny Williams came to the Cubs and won a WS, I think he would definitely be considered the best GM in the history of baseball. At least one of the best. KW's problem is a problem with consistency, which Theo hasn't had a problem with yet (until now, I'm sure).

Angelo and Hendry used the same Empty Vinyard!

Sure, I hope and expect Theo to get better players, but more important, doesn't bow down to every agents demands!

Not really. They thought the same thing about Dusty Baker and Lou Piniella. They'll hate Theo before he leaves too.
