Quote:
(CBS) According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post, sources indicate the Red Sox will allow general manager Theo Epstein to interview with the Cubs.

Sherman tweets: “I am shocked, but in last 36 hrs every exec talk to says believe Red Sox will give permssion and Theo will go to Cubs to be GM.”

Epstein has come under fire lately as he oversaw one of the most historic collapses in baseball history as the Red Sox missed out on a Wildcard berth in dramatic fashion. The team already parted ways with manager Terry Francona on Friday.

The Cubs GM position has been open since the official dismissal of Jim Hendry in August.

Could Boston really be dumb enough to let Epstein and Francona go after this season? I mean I know it was bad, but this seems like a HUGE overreaction

He will need a 10 year deal as I don't think the entire system has a player Theo will like.

Maybe Brett Jackson and Darwin Barney get to stay.

He will trade Castro!

Bill James

I think Bill James was the one who pushed hard for Ortiz and how LH power in Fenway was vital to winning.

And Epstein gets credit for that? I'd rather have Freidman.

So would I. However, should he be unavailable, who would you like to have instead? The answer doesn't have to be Theo.

Why wouldn't he get credit for 2 championships?

Freidman would be fine with me too.

One would have to have a lot more info at one's disposal to make that choice. GM's aren't like players obviously. No stats to evaluate, just track records. I just don't see that Epstein has really been all that great frankly. That Lackey contract was a joke. To me, the guy just throws a shitload of money around, second only to the Yankees.

Those championships go on his record but I just don't remember him making great trades, astute signings, etc. resulting in them winning. I attribute it to the huge payroll. Who the fuck couldn't be a GM when you rank number 2 in all of baseball in that category?

I'd like to see Pat Gillick but he's in semi-retirement.

I'm still waiting on my Boston fan peeps to get a really good feel about the Theo thing. My initial thought would be hell yes. The rational me says a 37 year old with two championships, in a similar situation, is quite intriguing. I would want to know what relationships he's developed, and who he's pissed off. He was the golden boy. People don't like that.

Next, I'd need to see which of the homegrown guys he's actually responsible for today. Also, what's in the pipeline that he, or his guys, are responsible for today. If you're giving him a President role, how are the people skills? He's never been a President. He's had people above him. It would be Tom and Theo. Coming to A&E.

All excellent points which I agree with. Whoever runs Boston's farm system has done well. I'd sure take that guy over the great Tim Wilken. My other concern is Epstein is a Boston native. Wouldn't Chicago be like sloppy seconds??

Imagine if Theo was the guy that won Boston, and the Cubs a World Series. That's not Dan Hampton at a Jewel fame. That's F You fame, money, and living for life.

Theo did a great job of finding steroid-infused talents like Curt Shilling, David Ortiz and Manny. If he can find more of them, I want him on the Cubs.

Theo's been in that gig for nine years. By today's standards, nine years is gold watch territory. He's also been in Boston. Not just the Boston we know, media, exposure, etc., but it's his home area. He, as GM, brought two championships. Not the norm prior to him arriving. Chicago a step down? No. It would be a new challenge.

Like Hendry was great at finding steroid infused talent like Lee, Ramirez, Walker, Alou, Barrett, Prior, Wood, Borowski, Zambrano, etc. He just didn't find Sosa. Need I go on?

The guy may be good but I'd have to have more facts relative to his job performace before I "annoint" him as the East coast media has. And yes, he did certainly benefit from Manny and the Roid Brothers in winning those championships. That seems factual. It would be helpful to have some Boston fans insight into how he did his job there. I am skeptical.

Sadly, they have an even higher opinion of their team. I'm hoping to get a rational analysis. But if someone asked me for that, after what happened this week, I'd probably hit me. Oh, and I'm a Dickhead Cubs fan. But that shit sucked.

So, rationale aside, what do we have? Pretty much past history, ESPN blowhards, and youth. Or Yut, if that makes you more comfortable. Two yuts, are Pedroia and Ellsbury. I would normally check my stats and background before bringing them up. I'm not interested right now. There are others.
