I'd like to hear from all the people who blasted Soriano. With 29 HRS and 101 RBI and counting, the man is what many including myself have also maintained: a legit power bat and a great teammate. And with actual decent defense this year, he actually has been a pretty complete player.

Yes, they should still look to trade him, but frankly, given the team will still suck next year, if they can't get a good return in a trade, they should keep him for 2013 at least up until the deadline. They owe him 36M for the next 2 years and I would not trade him for some scrub minor leaguers and eat 30M. If you are going to trade him, they better at least get a quality prospect or 2 plus have to eat no more than 16M.

Eh, much better than I expected...but means nothing..would have liked him more if he excepted the trade to frisco.

Is this a joke? This year doesn't excuse any of Soriano's crappy play over the years. The flailing at balls in the dirt for strike 3. The throws to the wrong base. The boneheaded base running. Play when it means something. His stats this year don't mean jack squat. Fuck Soriano.

Bingo. The Cubs paid a franchise crippling amount for him and he wasn't very good.

No excuses.

Fuck Soriano and him denying a trade at the deadline.

I thought the idea of Soriano rejected a trade at the deadline was debunked

I'm just happy he put up these great numbers in the years they had back to back playoff appearances when he was in his prime.

Oh wait...

look, I hate Soriano. I hate everything he stands for...approach at the plate, poor outfield coverage. But the Cubs don't have anyone pushing him. No clear candidate from the minors to put in his place. So let 'em get whatever they can get out of him. Might as well get something for the money.

He put up good numbers overall in those years but choked in the playoffs like the rest of the team and played shit defense.

He could have easily just said fuck it and collected his money but he has instead put up a solid year and continues to be a good teammate.

I respect the effort and the results this year irrespective of the circumstances.

Run and tell that, homeboy.

I disagree. Dunn has hit many clutches HR's. Soriano's numbers are for a pathetic team. Yes his stats are good, which I have been commending him for, but I give Dunn the edge.

What I think is what I've maintained all along. Soriano is a legit power bat and has value. I give Dunn the edge only because he has hit many a clutch HR for the Sox this year, unlike last year when he had one of the worst years EVER in MLB history.

Some AL team should go after Soriano as a DH because in the right park with the right lineup, he could easily hit 40 and drive in 120.

I'll say this about Soriano. He did everything he could to make himself a somewhat attractive trade possibility. The only problem being he vetoed said trade. I understood the horrible contract when the Cubs signed it. I agreed with it, knowing the terms. They forgot to win. He's not a horrible guy. If he was, he'd be in Miami. It was a nice little season with absolutely no pressure. I'd move him in winter and take whatever you can get.

Soriano not only had a nice season at the plate, what he has done in Left Field has been an unexpected surprise. He actually looks like a MLB OF. He always had an accurate arm,but his fielding has been very good. I still wish they would have just cut him when the team was sold to Ricketts. His contract should have been figured into the purchase of the club.

Nobody will miss you.

Quote:
Cubs' Soriano says he's open to offseason trade

CHICAGO (AP) -- Chicago Cubs left fielder Alfonso Soriano says he is open to being traded in the offseason.
The 36-year-old is having his best season in years. He said Wednesday that ''I just want to have one more shot to go to the World Series before I (retire).''
Soriano has two years remaining on his contract and says he will consider walking away when the deal is up.
The Cubs lost 100 games for the first time since 1966. Depending on how long they expect the rebuilding process to take, Soriano is not opposed to staying.
He is slated to make $18 million each of the next two seasons. Soriano hit 32 home runs with a career-high 108 RBIs this season.
He has two World Series appearances with the New York Yankees in 2001 and 2003, but has not won a championship.

Did he not understand the concept of being traded to a contender at the deadline....hence greatly improving his chances of going to the World Series? What a dumbass.

Apparently doesn't want to go to the AL, as being a DH is "boring." Way to be a team guy! Let's face it...regardless of how surprising his numbers were this year (and they were essentially all produced in garbage time), he has NEVER ONCE earned the money the Cubs paid him. There isn't one year where he earned his paycheck or reached the same level of play he had prior to signing. The LEAST he could do is accept a trade.

I would bet a lot of money that Anthony Rizzo's best year isn't as good as what Soriano did this past season. There's a lot of irrational hatred for Soriano.

Absolutely no pressure. Absolutely no expectations. No responsibility whatsoever.

Just go out and collect your checks.

Those sure are some adverse conditions to overcome and be a "team guy."

That wouldn't mean Rizzo is bad. If you could pretty much pencil him in for 24-28 HRs and 85-95 RBI once he gets established, wouldn't most Cubs fans be happy with that?

Taking the Rizzo discussion out of the equation plenty of the Soriano hate is plenty justified. From the stupid hop to taking multiple years to get even mediocre at playing the easiest defensive position on the field. To his horrendous strikeouts with runners in scoring position and his abysmal playoff numbers from 07 to 08. I realize it is mostly Hendry's fault for giving a middling player entering his declining years such a big contract but as a Cubs fan the hate of Soriano is plenty justified.

Exactly, Soriano is the center-piece of the entire later Hendry period of the organization. All of that hate is entirely justified.

I'm happy he put together his best season in this contact during a 100 loss season.
