Count me as somebody who gave up on him a couple years ago and laughed at his promotion to AAA but WOW what a nice surprise. Another bomb tonight and reports are his defense is now average at worst.

Fwiw I alwaays felt the old regime's ignorant way of keeping position players in the minors until their mid 20s was/is a horrible and aproductive way to build a franchise... Vitters was a victim of this... Instead of throwing his major league ready bat into the bigs and having the best coaches working with him on defense every day, he was forced to sit around and wait...

Count me in as someone who believes he became more disenchanted than bad at baseball...

He actually had a pretty good second half last year after coming back from an injury.

Hendry was bound to get one first round pick right. Maybe this is the one.

The product of Wilkens/Hendry is Hayden Simpson!!!!!

This one still pisses me off more than any pick! When you make a first round pick out of a guy who isn't even on some peoples top 50 pitchers, you better be extra sure. Especially when you can pick him in the 2nd, 3rd.....10th round!!!!!

One year later and his 7 ERA is further proof

From what I've read, Hendry wanted Weiters but Zell was pinching pennies and they somehow decided on Simpson, which was a total joke at the time and in retrospect remains a total cruel joke.

If true, it is further proof how bad a GM Hendry was in not standing up to Zell and insisting on Weiters.

I'd rather watch a "prospect" than Ian Mather at 3rd.

I stand corrected. In 2007, Hendry wanted Weiters but Zell pinched pennies and they took Vitters. Same principle applies to Hendry and he even looks worse now for allowing Simpson to be drafted in Rd 1.

Vitters biggest problem is plate discipine/pitch recognition. Keith Law and others have raved about his power and the technical aspects of his swing. He makes a lot of contact and rarely strikes out. Unfortunately he's had a tough time laying off of bad pitches. When he's able to be more patient, take a few walks, and wait for his pitch, he will be in the bigs.

Vitters has always struggled at a level before returning and mastering it the next year. It shows that he is capable of developing. I expect to see him the 2nd half of this year in the bigs where he will struggle before figuring it out sometime next year. Patience will be rewarded with both he and Jackson.

If true, they could have a Rizzo, Castro, Vitters, BJax nucleus with Baez maybe by 2014 not to mention if Lake blossoms.

The positive is that this shows he's able to make adjustments and rebound from struggles. My concern is him not being able to do this at the highest level.

My guess is Theo will give him a look when Vitters obp reaches the .350 range. That's Theo's Cubs Way, right? If he's hitting .290/.330 at Iowa, I don't think they'll call him up and hope he figures it out.
