Glad to see Theo is not unequivocally saying Svuem will be back. I certainly don't think he has proven he can aide in the development of young players and clearly he lacks the ability to manage a bullpen and with basic baseball strategy.

I say launch his ass.

Inside the Cubs, None - September 17, 2013 7:19 pm

“No alarms” but no vote of confidence for Sveum from Theo

MILWAUKEE – Less than two weeks are left in the Cubs’ season, but team president Theo Epstein is unwilling to say yet whether manager Dale Sveum will return next year for the final year of his contract.
“That’s just something that gets addressed after the season,” Epstein said Tuesday, about 20 hours after Sveum and $52 million pitcher Edwin Jackson were caught on camera in a heated dugout altercation.
“No alarm bells to ring,” Epstein said. “That’s a subject that gets addressed as a matter of process, as a matter of routine, after the season, after a period of evaluation, which we’re in the midst of right now.”
The subject has gained traction on the local airwaves and Twitterverse as the Cubs close on what’s fast approaching the worst two-year stretch in franchise history for losses, during a season in which several young hitters have taken steps back in their offensive development.
Critics also have picked at game decisions, including bullpen and bench moves, with a roster that has been severely flawed and unstable since Sveum took over last season.
“I’ll say that Dale’s been given a difficult hand to play at times by us,” Epstein said. “I think there’s certain categories in which it’s hard to evaluate hm.”
Epstein, in Milwaukee with other front office officials for long-scheduled end-of-the-year meetings with Sveum and the coaching staff, praised Sveum for his ability to maintain effort from the players and an incident-free environment during two otherwise ugly seasons – using the Jackson incident as an example.
“That really is the first incident in two very difficult seasons, which I think is a feather in Dale’s cap. “Obviously not everything’s gone the way we wanted the last two years, but as far as like incidents and tempers flaring and conflicts, there really hasn’t been that many. Teams sometimes take on the personality of their manager, and Dale being so even-keeled and calm has rubbed off on the atmosphere.
“Considering it’s a big market, and that there’s been some brushfires in the past here, I think you have to give Dale a lot of credit for that.”

He seems to get them to play hard, however, most of these guys have the motivation of just trying to survive as a big leaguer. The defense has not been good or at least has not gotten better under him and the hitting certainly has not gotten better. What do you expect when you hire fucking rob deer though. I think he sticks until after next season and then gets axed unless they feel his ability to coach hitting and defense is shit.

He probably does survive until next season but no way I see them extending him unless the team makes noticeable strides next year.

The real question is if they feel he is the type of manager that can develop the kids. If not, he is toast.

I think he is just holding down the fort. He is a crazy and scary enough to keep the guys in line but when it comes to actually coaching and managing he is not accomplishing much.

I agree.

Girardi will be a free agent.

Would like to see them find a young Joe Maddon.

I think he is a Cardinal lifer but I would try to snag Ron "Pop" Warner away from the Cards AAA team. He is still young, great success in the minors, good teacher and commands a team without being your typical raging asshole. All of the Cardinals home grown talent has gone through him.

I wonder if they'd once again limit their search to guys who have at least coached in the big leagues. Hiring a guy like this Warner would make sense. That's why I didn't understand why they didn't want Sandberg. The guy proved he was good with young players and they could have plugged him in for the next 10 years.

Who knows, maybe PHI doesn't bring him back and the Cubs hire him, but that's a big time long shot.

Every team in baseball would also like to find one.

Dale's been fine. It really comes down to if the front office believes he's a guy to develop kids. Record is inconsequential.

The thing is, if you get rid of Svuem now, there is nothing sexy about this team that will garner the interest of a "real" manager. They are still essentially operating as an expansion team and might do it for the next three years. You essentially would get Dale Svuem 2.0 with the new hire.

Actually, he would be great as an interim manager for the next three years. I wouldn't want him managing the 2018 World Series team though.

What players have gotten better under this clown? Then throw your weight around? How tough is it to lose 190 games in 2 years? How many managerial jobs will Dale have after this one? Tata

The team fighting with him and then virtually quitting with 2 weeks left is not going to help his case. The efforts they have put up recently are pathetic. I would also like to know who is forcing Dale to put fucking Barney and his almost mendoza line average in the lineup every day. He CAN NOT FUCKING HIT.

As they say around here: THIS!

I feel Dale should be left alone until he gets a major league team to manage.

But why? They owe him his contract, he'll get that. They don't owe him anymore.

They clearly aren't measuring him on wins and losses. But if he isn't developing players, like they thought he would... why keep him around? Specifically if they believe he is a cause for Castro's decline, and some of Rizzo's struggles. If he isn't helping those two players they need to find someone who can, because in the next 2 seasons there is going to be a hell of a lot more developing to do at the major league level.

Renovations get completed in 2014. New revenue gets generated over the following year and the team signs some key free agents in '15, '16 and '17 to build towards 2018. Patience Frank, we will get there together.

Swaimer finally puts Logan Watkins in the lineup playing 2nd. He gets 3 hits and the Cubs win. Less Barney=more wins.

Dale should have never been hired in the first place.

I don't get these lineups he keeps pulling out of his ass. I realize you are basically playing for the 3-5th draft pick at this point but at least make an effort. Barney doesn't bat 2nd on most AAA teams so why the hell do you keep putting a guy batting .208 there? Why is Sweeney who has some power this year and has hit fairly well batting 8th? Why is Darnell McDonald and his old ass still on this roster and in a lineup to begin with? Logan Watkins might be useful in the future and after he gets 3 hits yesterday you sit his ass on the bench again for another week? Get him some big league at bats already.

There is definately no reason not to play Watkins unless he is being told not to. As for Sweeney hitting 8th behind the immortal Darnell McDonald and also batting Barney 2nd, well that's just Dale being Dale working that lefty/righty matrix...

I think they figured he would be a good soldier willing to eat the shit sandwich that is this roster this year and last without going off in the media which he hasn't. They may have also felt he'd bring something to the table relative to augmenting the hitting, which he clearly hasn't. And the biggest isssue is he just has not been a difference maker with the young talent and therefore it's pretty obvious he needs to get launched.
