D.Kaplan obtained a copy of the rooftop contract. No one knows for sure, how he got his hands on it, but rumor has it that he crawled through the air vent and into C.Kenny's office to obtain a copy.

http://www.csnchicago.com/cubs/exclusive-look-inside-cubs-rooftop-contract

Looks like the Cubs had an eight year grace period with the rooftops, where they couldn't expand the ballpark without paying a fine. That deal was up last January and they can do whatever they want. IF, 1)The city approves and signs off. CHECK, and the changes are considered expansion. Should be a slam dunk for the Cubs with a few minor fines for things they didn't do in the contract.

KISS MY HAIRY AZZ, ROOFTOP OWNERS!

The upshot seems to be "this could really go either way, but the Cubs have more power on their side and it will be made sure that they win." Okay. Enjoy your advertisements, everybody.

I think my grandmother's aunt owned the building on Sheffield that used to have the Torco sign, but I didn't learn this until she died, I didn't know this person existed, I think her kids sold it, I never got to see a game from it, and so none of this has never informed my pro-neighborhood-symbiosis stance on Wrigleyville.

As I feared, the Cubs hamstrung themselves for a few million per year. I don't really blame Trib owners, as they probably never had plans to expand anyway. The blame falls to Ricketts for not knowing what he was getting into, which was stated numerous times when he bought the team. He bought at a discount, in part due to various encumbrances such as this and the landmark status.

I bristle at calling $900 million for a shitty baseball team a discount.

Great find on rooftop contract by @thekapman . Section 6,6 states the Cubs cannot block views permanently . Very dicey for arbitrator.

Only as long as the contract is valid, right?

Not sure what you are asking, but in the CSN article it says "The agreement, which is dated Jan. 27, 2004 runs until Dec. 31, 2023."

How much annually do the Cubs profit from these god damn rooftops?

Only as long as they care about "The Wrigley Experience" that has generated billions of dollars over the last thirty years. Of course, they're welcome to move to Schaumburg and become the Tampa Rays if they like. They should do it.

Seriously, how can it be that for twenty-five years Wrigley Field was "the greatest place to watch baseball on planet earth" and drew more fans than almost everyone without video boards and wanton signage, but suddenly it's a miserable place that requires all these changes for the Cubs- who already are the most profitable team in the game- to compete?

And if you're a Cubs fan why are you so sure that making those changes is going to improve things rather than destroy them?

but after that, the rooftop owners can look to overturn the city's legislation authorizing signage. That is a much more difficult battle to win but it can be done and will certainly delay things 1-2 more years if it happens.

I think Loukas is just staying above it all. He doesn't need to worry about any of that shit. Cubbie Bear North busted out and he laughed it off.

I havent followed this nearly as closely as most. I thought this deal had like 8 more years at the most.

But even 2023, permanent is a weird word to use.

I read "permanent" as "fixed". In other words, the contract may allow the placement of portable signs. But who knows how a Cook County judge sees it.

I think Cubs fans are just fucking tired about the Wrigley Field debate. It's getting to the point where I don't fucking care what happens to Wrigley. I just want:
a) Cubs to win a World Series
b) Ricketts to shut the fuck up how he needs more revenue.
The goofy signs and video banners and other campy shit shuts Fanboy up. Mission accomplished.

That just means they can temporarily block the views with promotional crap for special events or flags. They can't block it with a permanent structure during the length of the contract. They could build the green fucking monster in 2023.

This is where Rickets needs to legitimately threaten to move. Either they settle and void the contract or they move. Enough of this shit.

Mr LAWERS?

Any expansion of Wrigley Field approved by governmental authorities shall not be a violation of this agreement, including this section.

Assuming the permit they have now 'Applied for" via Online gets processed, Game Over?

Wonder if they will run into the same issues I do...

ME "Hello, I am checking on the status of my permit?"
CITY "Jimmy Faluniaksito is assigned to that, but he is out today"
ME "Do you know when he will be back?"
CITY "Hmmm he is on furlough today and tomorrow, Monday is a city holiday, Tuesday he will be back then leaves again on Wed after lunch for furlough"
ME 'Can I make an appointment to see him?"
CITY "No sir, we dont make appointments, you need to come in and ask for him"
ME "Can I get a direct line for him?"
CITY 'No, sir he doesnt have a direct line"
ME "So, I need to come in and ask to see him and just hope he comes out?"
CITy 'yes sir, anything else I can do for you?"
ME "No, I will go donate more money to an Alderman so i can talk to a person who doesnt work for a living"

Rahm isn't stupid. Moving isn't a real possibility. Wrigley is the golden goose. It would be like a seven year old threatening to find new parents.

Ricketts acts like a 7 year old fan. So Thursday we should be hearing threats.

How is that other MLB teams and cities even survive then JORR? They don't all play in Wrigley. Rickett's ruined his leverage by committing to staying at Wrigley. Yes...Wrigley has a natural draw and is a tourist stop / destination....but that is not to say realistically the Cubs could not be a successful business and team elsewhere. Someone would give them a new golden goose to replace the old one!

Moving is off the table. Stop yourselves.

Its just time for the cubs to crush these idiots.

That people even want them to try to move (and they would fail) is perverse. Why not just reduce to absurdity and say they should move to San Antonio? Whatever it takes to win a championship, right? Favorable tax rates!
