Cubs only 6.5 back of the Wild Card with 104 games left to make up ground. Currently sporting 10th best pitching staff in ERA and stashing secret weapon in Bryant for the stretch run. Once they get in they have just as good a chance as anyone. Or so I hear.

Picked up a game and now only 5.5 with 103 to go. At this incredible pace the Cubs will run away with the wild card with a 90+ game lead.

No I dont think they are even close to doing anything, which frustrates the crap out of me because the Closer is on the team right now. RAMIREZ. But of course we need to showcase RONDON and STROP to see if anyone will give us crap for them. So, losses are coming due to moves like this.

Olt needs to be sent back down and let him pile up some gaudy stats and someone will take another shot with him.

Junior Lake has won the job for THIS YEAR. Ruggialisholtzny can platoon CF and RF.

Darwin, survival of the fittest. Thanks

I understand guys are going to be traded again and then guys are coming up, but thats it! This year is the end of that shit! THE PLAN

I have no idea what you're talking about bigfan. The baseball experts have spoken and said you can declare contenders as of now. 5.5 out. CONTENDER

Of course. Even contenders to be contenders are contenders. Except the Cubs. They are just mindless Theo worshippers!

But Kirkwood is right, Cubs right in the mix. I would add that the truly secret weapon is Kylie Schwarber who will
probably have a Yadi 2006 type post season

Ok, rpb and Kirkwood are on the list of people to make fun of if the Cubs don't come close to the playoffs. You know Frank and good dolphin will get a lot of grief if the Sox finish 10 games out. It's only fair.

They could be the worst team in the National League after today.........but only 5.5 out!!!

I would rather they stay the course and finish last so they can get a top draft spot and then take under slot players!!!! Hell Yes!!!!

I feel like the winning streak means a trade is coming to solidify a 90 loss season.

Wow. Guess I need to start using emoticons

I thought saying a kid who got drafted three days ago would come up big in the playoffs would tip off the sarcasm, but it appears not

And I don't and haven't mocked the optimism. I just pointed out the irony in gd saying cub fans have low expectations and frank going on about contending for a wild card in the same thread

Wow. Leaving your boy Kirkwood on the island all by himself.

I guess it's just Kirkwood we will mock or praise.

Legitimately contending for a playoff spot one season removed from losing 99 games is not low expectations for any ballclub IMO. You disagree.

I have said on this board many times and will continue to say that the 2007 Cubs season and 2008 White Sox seasons were not failures, but pretty damn successful. Sure they fell short of winning it all, but going from last place (in the Cubs case, the worse record in all of baseball) to division winners the following year is very good.

But ask yourself, if the situation were reversed would dolphin be mocking Cub fans?

If the White Sox end up 10 games out of the playoffs we should be mocking the Sox fans that said it.

To mock them now is the strange part though.

We can keep going in circles. dolphin called out the cubs fans for low expectations and then frank started talking up a team a then 31-30 team and their contention for the wild card (which I find to be the definition of low expectations)

There is somewhere in the middle between low expectations and high expectations though.

Like Clint Eastwood told Little Bill at the end of Unforgiven, It ain't about fair.

I can weather the storm.

It really is criminal the way they wasted the pitching performances this year (probably last year as well). This is a contending rotation...no, not .500 fringe contenders but serious chance to win every day contenders. Low priced, short term FA in the field would have made all the difference in the world BOTH on the business side and the playing side.

I don't see how management cannot be held in greater contempt. This year is a CLEAR example of what many have said for the past few years, you can win both at the MLB level and on the development level simultaneously.

Well said

The only caveat is if you believe that some guys perform better with no pressure (the Adam Dunn effect)

I don't know if Dunn plays better with less pressure, i.e. on shittier teams. I think it's more likely that on a shittier team, he becomes the guy who is pitched around leading to a higher walk rate, and everything follows from there.

I would guess pitching would be even more affected by pressure.

Who knows
