No thanks. Great defensively and knows how to handle the pitchers but he's too old and will want too much money.

Hey,what was the name of that fat backup catcher the Cubs had in 2013? I wanted to see what he did last season. Is he a FA again?

Yeah, not sure about this. I guess the handling of the staff and being a veteran leader is being counted on?

Theo says any FA contract usually=wasted money. So far his salary looks like wasted money, too!

He is 31, he didnt play that much, only 379 AB's, I am just guessing they arent going to expect more AB's from him. H eid bat .290 and from all reports he did very well with the pitching staff,

His Pitt deal was 2 years for $15 mill....chump change

Sign him for 3 years for 27 mil. Him and Castillo would complent each other nicely. Give Castillo a 1st BM glove so he can rest Rizzo here & there.

Okay jimmy, who else are the Cubs supposed to sign?

Who would you sign? Cubs need a veteran leader who is good for the clubhouse. Who is the leader of this team if not someone like Martin? You really want Castro or Rizzo as your clubhouse leaders? Pick a lane Jimmy.

You complain they don't sign free-agents. Then when they are in the market for one of the top free-agents, you say nah, I like Castello.

No need to pay through the ass for these guys. Go find 3 or 4 mid-level guys that can hit and maybe one frontline pitcher with some cheap inning-eater guys that Epstein always finds.

And that's all they need to win? Or does that not matter in this thread?

Who are those 3 or 4 guys, by the way? None of this nebulous crap; the internet can bring you names and numbers in an instant.

You want to win or do you want to be the Whitsox? Didn't you say the Cubs needed to spend money last year? Now they want to spend money to improve the team and you are saying, not to spend too much money because... ... why?

Because he's trolling. He started out serious but no longer believes half the stuff he says. At some point it became fun to complain about it all, so now he just rolls with it and says things for a reaction. He's Cubs fan JORR.

I'd start with Carlos Gonzalez (not a FA) from the Rockies IF they eat part of his salary and/or take Edwin Jackson as part of any trade. He was injury plagued last year but he could rebound nicely in Wrigley. As far as FA, 2nd tier guy that can help like a Jonny Gomes,Wil Nieves (better than Baker),Hanley Ramirez. As far as pitching, they could bring back Hammels for starters. That looks like a nice haul to me.

Aside from the Martin debate, Rizzo is absolutely a leader type and I expect he'll continue to take on that role

well, you started out fairly well there but then you said Hanley's a second tier guy.

Why not keep the current catcher? I like him enough....

Theo made it clear they want to add veteran presences in multiple spots this year (rotation, pen, field, etc). He also said there aren't many spots to add someone like that in the lineup. Catcher is the best option. And not only does it help the lineup, but it helps the defense and the starting pitching.

Who in the bloody hell is going to trade for Edwin Jackson? There are sometimes trades that indicate a GM might be "out-of-town stupid", but I don't know that we're going to be able to locate a GM that's "out-of-town Terri Schiavo".

You act as if the anomalous year in his career is the norm.

Catcher is a defensive position. Find a guy who can hold down the position defensively at a reasonable cost and look to spend on offense elsewhere. I would place Russell Martin very high on the list of guys who will not live up to whatever contract they sign in this year's free agent class.

It's a bad year for catchers. Punt and review the position next year. Lots of teams do it.

Most WS champions in recent memory all have an established veteran catcher that can call a game and hit a bit. If the Cubs were to get Martin, it would be because they 1. Feel Martin fills that role 2. Castillo does not. 3. No other catchers will become available next offseason that will fill that role.

On top of that, considering they want to keep Schwarber a C, they may want Martin to groom him when he is ready in a few years instead of Castillo.
