SAN DIEGO (AP) -- A person familiar with the negotiations tells The Associated Press that right-hander Jason Hammel has agreed to a $20 million, two-year contract to return to the Chicago Cubs.

The person spoke on condition of anonymity Monday because the agreement had not yet been announced.

Hammel's deal includes a $12 million club option for 2017 with a $2 million buyout. If the option is exercised, the contract would be worth $30 million for three seasons.

The 32-year-old was 8-5 with a 2.98 ERA in 17 starts for the Cubs before he was traded to Oakland on July 5 with pitcher Jeff Samardzija. He went 2-6 with a 4.26 ERA for the Athletics.

This is a good signing, though not bold enough to push the Cubs into even an outside shot at competing for the central. Still, it won't cause problems down the road even if worst case scenario occurs.

It shouldnt be , that I will agree with, but just as people drop the great Don cooper roses at his feet, Hammel , while with Bosio was a very good, just short of great.

<insert pitching coach here>'ll fix em is a myth. It's a combination of good scouting, aggressive pursuit of a guy and a doable coach. If any of those 3 isn't good enough it doesn't work.

That goes for Cooper too. The Pirates right now are thinking they can make John Danks effective by getting him away from Cooper. I think they're right. I don't care, in done with Danks.
