For whatever it's worth, Sporting News has picked the Cubs to win the World Series in 2015. Seems a bit premature to me, but it's an early indication that some feel the team will be ready to compete for a playoff spot sooner, rather than later. I think 2016 is more likely. But it's been a while since I was as anxious for spring training as I am today.

Smart move by the Sporting News to let the marketing department make their pick.

Seriously? They lose all credibility with that garbage. Improved? Sure. Playoffs? Outside shot. But to pick them over teams such as the Dodgers or Cardinals is just asinine. Or, as mentioned, to generate "buzz" for their dying rag.

A guy at work brought this up today and I said "I can see why the sporting news is going under."

Well, I think Jorge Soler is an upgrade over the myriad outfielders who played RF before he was brought up last season and was one of the reasons for the team's better play down the stretch. Having Soler all season should help. Kris Bryant hit more homers than anyone in the majors last season and was the minor leagues MVP. I believe he will be ROY, hit .300 or better, with over 30 homers and over 100 RBI. Those are monster numbers for a rookie, but I believe he will eclipse them. Miguel Montero is an improvement at Catcher both defensively and offensively. Plus, I believe that with all the improvements to the team, guys like Castro and Rizzo will not be counted on to supply such a huge portion of the offense and with better hitters around them, their production will increase as well. Coghlan is a solid hitter too, who just got better as the year went along. It will be a legitimate offense in 2015. If Alcantara or Baez takes a big step forward as well, it could be lots of fun to watch this offense.

I used to look forward to receiving TSN in the mail. I loved that magazine.

That's a nice thought, but it's based on 90 big league at-bats.

  Yeah, he hit a lot of homers against has-beens and never-will-bes. This is the type of stuff RPB always insists Cub fans don't do. Predicting a guy with ZERO big league record as Rookie of the Year.

Well, it's hard to project a guy with a ton of major league experience for Rookie of the Year.

I dont think projecting a rookie award for a highly touted prospect is that crazy. Every list of guesses on rookie of the year will include players with little to no experience.

And I dont say Cub fans dont do this kind of thing, ever. But you act like Steve is the majority. There are 20-30 other Cub fans here NOT making those projections.

This article is clickbait and its insulting.

I expect Bryant and Soler to be decent. Itd be great if Castro and Rizzo continue 2014's numbers. Alcantara, Baez and Coghlan should be counted on for nothing.

At least a guy like Soler has shown he can hit in the big leagues. Steve doesn't know shit about Bryant except what he's read. And that's most people. They just like to talk shit. I have no idea who ROY might be and neither do you and Steve certainly doesn't. Did anyone predict Chris Coghlan as ROY? And he's not just saying he'll be ROY, he's projecting outlandish numbers as if the guy will suddenly be better than Puig and Goldschmidt. I think about six or seven guys hit better than .300 in the NL last year, but Kris Bryant is just going to come up and do that and then get better from there. It's absurd, really.

I dont read Steve's posts. My response was about projecting ROY. The numbers are pretty crazy but again, that's Steve. Let me know when Rogue, Peoria Matt, Kirkwood and the others make those projections.

Bryant may not even be with the club in April.

yet? The 2015 Cubs are going to suck. And suck hard. Worse than this last season. Why people would expect potential to translate in one single season is beyond me.
