Ted Lilly pitched in the bigs from 1999 through 2013 and made roughly $80 million in salary. So, if he got a $200,000 RV, he should’ve been able to afford insurance. And, even if he didn’t get insurance, if he damaged his $200,000 RV, he should have been able to cover it out of pocket.

Allegedly, however, he didn’t do the former until too late and didn’t bother with the latter:

Retired professional baseball player Ted Lilly has been charged with insurance fraud in San Luis Obispo County . . .

According to the California Department of Insurance, Lilly damaged his RV worth around $200,000 but did not file a claim until after he purchased insurance on the vehicle. The amount of the claim is not known at this time.

Assistant District Attorney Lee Cunningham alleges the crimes happened in March of last year.

Dang, during his first March where he wasn’t in a spring training camp in his adult life. Some people just aren’t made for the real world.

If convicted, Lilly could face up to five years in prison.

that's "all-star ted lilly" to you and yours! #NevarForger

but yeah, go figure that just because people are relatively/rich that they still might be cheap.... although i think i can understand it more in the case of a recently-retired pro athlete because the gravy train of big/crazy $$$ is over and i reckon for the first year or two afterwards there's a big shock to the system when they realize they don't have a 7+ figure income to come in and cover all of the stupid costs that they couldn't be arsed with when they were still raking in the dough into their mid-to-late 30s.

not to mention in the past when come cost like this came up he could simply throw a bunch of $$$ at it and it'd surely go away ,but now that he's no longer necessarily raking in a for-sure 7-8 figures/year maybe he's got a relatively-tight budget and thus tossing around $20-200k like it's nothing is suddenly everything, so they'll get caught up trying to take a couple of shotcuts in situations like this one.

....but it's really jailtime for trying to purchase insurance after the fact and claim that this accident happened after you got it? methinks simply saying "oh hell no that shit isn't gonna fly, ted" is probably enough egg-in-face alongside some sort of fine or probation (unless he has a storied criminal history that we forgot about when he came here to prop up the back-end of a staff meant to make a run at the world series, as i wanna say he came here for either the 2008 or 2009 season?) --- cuz again, while the letter of the law might say it's "fraud" and all that, this just strikes me as someone rolling the dice and taking a chance he could get away with some bullshit that countless others have likely gotten away with throughout the annals of human history. insurance companies are more than glad to take your $$$ ad infinitum if nothing happens to your stuff, so you could end up paying tens of thousands of dollars to insure something that doesnt need it for 10 years and that's all good, but god forbid somebody try to do the flipside to them. naturally ted could have tried being really shady and getting the insurance, getting the claim in/through and then canceled his insurance within like 6 months of getting the settement. but if he ended up getting insurance/payout and the insuring the thing for years and years where was no need for any payouts, again, that's just good ideal business in the insurance industry.

so yeah TLDR = does he REALLY deserve jail for trying to pull a fast one here? idk about that. while he's clearly a lazy dumbass for getting in this situation in the first place, idk if he belongs to be alongside people who shot someone while they were robbing a 7-11 or something. he just tried gaming a system that exists so that it can ideally game you..... but such is the power of $$$/big-business in contemporary society. c'est la vie.

Lilly came here for 2007 with Soriano, Marquis, DeRosa, and Piniella. I hope "Forger" for "Forget" was unintentional, because that's perfect.

Always need to ask whats up with that one quiet guy. Lilly is that guy. I used to think the quiet guy in a group was kinda smart, over time I have learned more to think that guy is just too dumb to add something to the conversation.

Proof that I was right is in the fact a guy tries to buy insurance after the fact....and for something the guy could probably buy 100 times over!
