Reportedly, the Cubs are in discussions with the Padres about taking James Shields in a trade for a mid level prospect. The Padres want the Cubs to take on the entire contract, but the Cubs want the Padres to pay a portion of the contract. Maddon likes Shields a lot and he would certainly upgrade the 4th spot in the rotation.

Interesting, if true. He's owed $63 million over the next three seasons and is 34 years old and is coming off a down season (for him). SD would need to pay a decent number for this to be considered - 15-20 million to reduce the risk on this.

110M for a 30 YO with declining FB velocity. He's a #3 starter at best.

They got Lackey to do the same job for 32Mfor 2 years and Lackey is a proven post season performer.

I disagree. I think they Cubs can afford to eat some of that extra salary and Shields gives you a much, much more reliable pitcher than Hammel/Hendricks.

Hell, then the Cubs could pitch Hammel until July when he starts to suck, trade him, and move Hendricks into the rotation.
