As a Sox fan, Thornton has been by far the worst player on the team this season. In fact, if I had to blame one guy for where they're at, it would be him. He took the wind out of what should have been a great start with those bad blown saves. His salary and standing on the team are causing Guillen to continue to send him out in high leverage situations instead of using Ohman and/or Sale. Now he causes losses by failing to retire Corey Fucking Patterson.

Fukudome can barely keep his job.

Why is Beardown's premise so incomprehensible? He is saying that Adam Dunn is the worst starter in baseball right now. While I disagree, it's not that much of a stretch, and it's certainly debatable. Career stats are meaningless against the argument he is trying to make.

Wins Above Replacement:

Chone Figgins -1.2
Aubry Huff -0.9
Miguel Tejada -0.9
Dan Uggla -0.8
Orlando Cabrera -0.8
Hideki Matsui -0.8
Adam Dunn -0.7
Juan Pierre -0.7

There are 6 players worse than Dunn and Pierre. WOO HOO!

I agree with the first two parts of the statement, but i wouldn't say he's had a "great career". He's been a good player. He's a power hitter. But I wouldn't call a guy who hit .250 at the time he's done it "great". Maybe if he puts up those kind of numbers over the next eight seasons that will be great. It appears offensive numbers are steadily dropping.

Moneyball has caused the average fan to believe that a hitter's primary job is "not making outs". The walks are often overrated. A middle of the order hitter is not paid to walk. You listen to certain people savage a guy like Juan Pierre for making "too many outs". Well, how many leadoff men have a better career OBP than Pierre.

I'm sure many fans who swear by Baseball Prospectus would have screamed at you and talked slowly and authoritatively about how Adam. Dunn. is. better. at. baseball. than. Paul. Konerko. before this season began. But now they're on the same team facing the same pitchers in the same lineup and the same conditions and you can get a better comparison than looking at career OPS+.

He is a slugger and until this year (at least so far) performed his job very well. Take that as you will I guess. As for Konerko vs Dunn, I don't think its fair to compare them against the competition right now due to what appears to be a career worst slump. If it continues than that comparison would be fine and obviously Dunn is going to have serious problems and be remembered as a huge bust.

yet his OBP is substancially better than Pierre's...what does that tell you?? You seem to think Pierre has a good OBP, when in fact it's always been on the low end of the scale, because of the lack of walks. His BA and OBP are never far apart.

Pierre's career OBP is .346

And Substantially does not have a 'C' in it.

a few stats

Dunn is currently ranks 174th out of 175 players in MLB batting average only leading Dan Uggla... but Uggla has 2 more home runs and plays a harder to fill position. Dunn is hitting a robust .024 against left handed pitching. Dunn has shown his love for his new home park whacking all of 2 HRs while hitting .123 at hitter friendly US Cellular.

Dunn is tied for the major league lead in strike outs with Drew Stubbs but Stubbs has 63 more ABs and has 3 more HRs and his BA is 84 points higher then Dunn.

Can he come back sure if he gets 100 hits in his next 350 ABs he will be at a respectable .260 BA and by just hitting 33 HRs in those 350 ABs he will for the 8th consecutive year have 38 or more HRs.....

So just relax as Stoney always tells us " by the end of the year his numbers will match the back of his baseball card"

Pierre's OBP is not a low end of any scale unless you want to compare him to premium middle of the order hitters. He's at .346 for his career. Who are the other leadoff guys who you think are better? I'll give you Fukudome if you want. He's at about .370 and I think less if you just look at his at-bats leading off. Obviously, there's Ichiro. Who else do you have?

Beardown gets attacked and told to go to a baseball reeducation camp becuse he suggested the 6th worst player in MLB by the numbers might be the worst overall.

Vince Coleman had two (2) seasons with an OBP over .346. Just for reference.

That was my mistake. I didn't see him say everyday player when I first read the post.

It's not that big of a stretch.

So Beardown, for the second day in a row, I apologi.

Still stupid to say he cannot run and cannot play defense because he is pretty good at both.

Yeah, Adam Dunn is a pretty good defender. Thats why he's played in the field 9 times this year.

He is a pretty good defender like the Guillen family is pretty good with the english language.

And dont mistake being a decent runner for his size for being pretty good at running.

He is not as bad as a defender as some people make him out to be, but he is not in MLB because of his glove or speed.

Depends on if were talking about LF. He is legendarily bad in LF. Sorianoesque. (See Cubs opening day 2006 for his Lupus from the Bad News Bears impression)

Should have been clear, he is not bad defensively at first bas. He hasn't played the field very often because he was signed to be a DH and we have Paul Konerko, who is a better defender at first.

But yes it sucks he is not hitting right now. I am sure we can all agree on that.

Soriano is actually decent out there compared strictly to other leftfielders. Dunn was atrocious.

I thought I read somewhere that Dunn was statistically better than Konerko as a full time first baseman last year.
