You are right about washburn. His ERA has risen and he's just not been as effective there. However, he really solidified the rotation, in terms of not having a guy like Contreras in the rotation that kills your bullpen every time out. He gives them a decent start and doesnt tax the bullpen as others had before he was aquired. The part about it being between theTigers and Twins for the division, is sure accurate and the post was made when the Sox were right at the top of the division and many Sux fans were celebrating Peavy comint to the wrong side of town and how they were going to win the division. I loved reading all about hoe Peavy sets up the Sox to succeed in the playoffs this year too!

So he has gained a run on his ERA in a month and still solidified the rotation.

Meanwhile French, the young starter they traded for him has remained consistently good in Seattle.

If you wanted to quote an accurate post in this thread, use the one where I wrote that French would be better than Washburn THIS YEAR.

You mean the Luke French thats 4-4 on the season? The Luke French that has a 4.62 ERA? The Luke French that gave up 7 runs on 10 hits in just 5 innings yesterday? Oh yeah, he's special

yeah he's been terrible 5+ E.R.A. since the trade which is just about a run less than Washburns 6.81 E.R.A. Since the trade

Lets see in a month where this trade has gotten the Sox and where the Tigers and Twins are, after getting guys who are able to contribute to their clubs right away. Then, lets see if Peavy is even pitching in a month, it sounds as though that is no certainty. The Sox fans are all excited and Kenny gets accolades for getting this done. In a couple years, Peavy will be sorry he signed on to pitch in the AL, in that launching pad, as his ERA away from Petco is decidedly higher and in U.S. Cellular it will be higher still. The Sox too, will rue the day, as Peavy will probably continue his trend of spending more than a month of each season on the DL and they will be stuck with an overpaid, injured pitcher, who's ERA will be considerably higher with the Sox than it has been with the Padres. Enjoy the fantasy, the reality will not be as pretty.

Looking pretty accurate so far...Guys like Peavy and Rios just kill a team. Both are good players, but they are paid as if they are EXCEPTIONAL players. They use a disproportionate percentage of the teams salary. Disproportional to their level of performance that is. Because of guys like these (Just like Zambrano, Ramirez and Lee for the Cubs) the team has far less flexibility to add players as needed. The team is hamstrung now for the next several years, before the salaries of these 2 guys are off the books. Kenny made 2 bold moves in getting Rios on the waiver claim and Peavy in trade, with no cash considerations included in either deal. The Sox took on 2 huge salaries and neither is looking very wise right now. Should Peavy make it onto the DL for the 4th year in a row for a month or more, this deal will look that much worse....actually, with the way he's pitched so far, maybe that wouldn't be such a tragedy.

Maybe for 2010, not for this season. You will be lucky to get 4-5 starts out of Peavy this year and coming off the DL, who knows what his pitch count will be or how well he will pitch in them. This is a VERY risky deal for the Sox. I did not want Peavy on the Cubs and stated so on these boards in no uncertain manner. the guy has now had stints on the DL of a month or longer, in EACH of the last 3 seasons and he makes big money which the Sox are on the hook for. The Padres have to be dancing in the streets that a club would take on that entire contract and give them a guy like Poreda, who I think is going to be really good. This contract will be a problem for Kenny Williams if he continues to have stretches on the DL every year and takes up such a large portion of the team salary. Yes, they have Thome, Dye (unless they pick up the option or resign him at a lesser number) and Contreras coming off the books. But they need to replace those players and with Peavy making as much as he does, it is likely they won't be going after the bigger fish. You watch, he will not stay healthy.

Boy was this ever on the money!

This was an accurate call, no doubt...the guy was on the DL over a month in each of the past 3 seasons and now he goes down with a season ending injury that may result in him NEVER being the same again. To take on the amount of salary due to Peavy as Kenny did was foolish. His numbers were in decline as was his health. Pitchers that start breaking down, often continue to break down, with increasing stints on the DL. As stated in the original post THE PADRES MANAGEMENT IS DANCING IN THE STREETS!!!

They are dancing in the streets because they are in first place. As for the rest of that rant, I couldn't hear you from down in the basement there. Try again when (and if) your team decides to climb out of there.

Good call.

Now what did you say about Alex Rios?

That it was another bad contract to take on. I never said Rios was a bad player, even though he hit just .199 after the Sox picked him up last season. I think he's a good player. But, he's paid like a superstar level player and he's not a superstar player. I maintain that it was not a smart idea to take on that deal. They could have aquired better players for less money in the offseason instead. He's played well this season, but he's not an All-Star. Yet he's being paid like one.

The Cubs are in 3rd place dipshit. They are ahead of Milwaukee, Houston and Pittsburg. I said before the seaon started that I thought they would finish around 3rd-thats where they stand. I didn't expect them to contend this season, so it's not a source of frustration that they are a lousy club. It doesnt really have anything to do with the post, but I'm not surprised you would want to change the subject.

If anybody knows about players like this, its Cubs fans. They've seen enough of that over the last 3-4 years.

I can't find the original quote but I think it was more than just saying "Rios isn't a superstar".

Only a stubborn fool wouldn't admit that Rios has been worth the money he's getting for this season so far. He's likely on his way to a career year, and his defense is pretty good.

I'm glad Rios is on the team, even with the salary he makes. I doubt Toronto is happy they lost a .300 hitter with above average defense.

Meanwhile, the Twins and Tigers have aquired players who upgrade their teams immediately in 2009. By the time Peavy throws a pitch this season for the Sox (if he does) it might be too late.

Here you go Rick...
