My brother was at the game last night, and reported another instance of the wave sweeping around the stadium. It also happened a few weeks back at the last game I attended. I know it's a stupid thing to be irritated with, especially given Sox fans' history as a whole, but my anger is never well-founded or rational. But, honestly, what the hell is going on with this crap?

This shit only happens when you have enough people to fill the stadium all the way around.
Last game I was at some dickhead threw back the home run ball and his section cheered.
All the other sections cheered when security took him out of the stadium.

I don't think you will have to worry about the wave for much longer. September tickets will be very easy to get this year.

That's what I'm banking on, as I'm going to need an entire section to sprawl my barely-alive body out onto after I've treated Halfway to St. Patrick's Day as an Irish wake.

I noticed this too. Its easy to spot the fans that joined the bandwagon after the world series.

Why does security care if you throw a ball back on the field? If you've got to catch a hard ball coming at you at 50mph to avoid getting hit in the head, you should be able to throw it back at the general direction it came from.

In other sports, it's expected that you will return the ball. Why is baseball different?

Unlike other sports, the actual value of a used baseball is probably less than 25 cents.

But that's not a good reason for being thrown out for returning it to the field of play.

You are an assclown if you throw anything onto the field, for any reason. If it's a ball, give it to a kid. You are also an assclown if you cheer after a ball being thrown back.

Hmm?
For some reason, stadium security at virtually all stadiums strongly discourage the practice of throwing objects onto the playing surface.
So much so, that it's actually printed on the tickets.
May have something to do with those ball & seat cushion giveaway disasters when the fans decided that the officiating did not meet their approval, and spontaneously decided to give their swag items back to the team.

Extendidng your logic for a moment, should the fans be allowed to throw back the player who comes flying into their seats?

By the time a home run ball has travelled 300+ feet its velocity is on the decline. Unimpeded, it will fall ultimately fall to the ground.

Wouldn't a falling baseball be accelerating at the rate of 9.8 m/s squared?

Most likely not, as the force applied to it by the motion of a swinging bat will likely exceed the terminal velocity of the ball. It would be decelerating towards it's terminal velocity, as determined as an application of air resistance (drag) aginst the gravity.

if a baseball takes 3 seconds to go 400 feet it is travelling at approximately 90mph.

But that's only the horizontal velocity. It diminishes significantly as it approaches the stands.

That's my point. Ultimately, it's velocity will only be vertical as it reaches the stands. There's a difference with trying to catch a ball bare handed on the pitcher's mound vs. 375 feet away in the bleachers.

alright damnit. if it was a line drive it would be travelling at 90mph. think McGwire's record breaking shot. so it has a 5 degree angle....

at lunch tomorrow i begin to calculate the velocity of an average home run to left field and we will know the truth via the math!

Here's an uninteresting fact. My uncle invented Nerds and many of the other popular Willy Wonka candies in the 80's and early 90's. It was great being a kid and having huge boxes of candy shipped to me for free. "We're happy for ya". That's all I have to add...

As a person who had a difficult time figuring out how to shoot a monkey falling off a tree with a bannana gun in Physics 101, I would think that the calculation is very simple and has already been performed.
