I never offered an opinion on the validity of your belief that the Sox are still contending because their deficit in the standings to Cleveland, Detroit and Minnesota is less than the number of games remaining against each team. Rather, I was simply pointing out that your assertion, in Cleveland's case, is demonstrably false, and therefore, by your logic, the Sox cannot be considered a contender.

i love the sox, and im still rooting for them to win as much as they can come hell or high water, but they have about a snowballs chance in hell of making the playoffs this year. the best thing kenny can do for this team is trade some guys-- contreras, dye, etc-- to set up for next year, and make some better off season moves. the #1 priority is getting a better bullpen, because this year's pen couldnt hit a barn door with a bulls' ass

They have to find a way to shave some payroll. Between Thome, Konerko, Buerhle, Vazquez, Contreras, and Garland, that's most of our payroll right there. At least two of those guys need to go, if just to free up money for other positions - especially if the payroll is going to stay at $100 million or so.
