Ever since the Pirates and a certain dickhead named Barry Bonds lost to the Braves in the 1992 National League Championship Series, they've become quite a team for drafting young players only to trade them away and that franchise hasn't had a winner ever since.
Thats due to the fact that Pittsburg (a small market team) could not then, nor can they now, keep their high priced talent. They have learned over the years, to trade their players who are approaching salary arbitration or especially free agency, to keep their payroll down. They hope that a fair number of the players they get in return pan out. It's apples and oranges when compared to the Sox, who can keep their players when they want to. Lastly, when you are a team like the Pirates who gets to draft right near, if not right at the top of the draft, you should hit on some of the guys you draft.
