The White Sox and 11-time Gold Glove infielder Omar Vizquel have agreed to terms on a one-year, $1.75-million contract for 2011.

Vizquel, a three-time American League All-Star, hit .276 last season while making starts at third base, second base, shortstop and designated hitter. A native of Caracas, Venezuela, the switch-hitter has posted a .985 career fielding percentage, the highest ever among shortstops with at least 1,000 games played, and his 2,850 games played are the most by a foreign-born player in baseball history.

Seems like a tad too much money. I say that assuming his stats will decline next year. Not a terrible signing though by any means

I see what you are saying, though he is a known quantity. Even if he goes belly up like an Aaron Miles type at the plate, he is gonna field 3 positions pretty well and give you a solid effort. Some of it was probably a reward for his work this year with Alexei.

my uncle is big into baseball, we're talking about the type of guy who has went and seen every team in the national league for the last three years. 90% of the time he wore an old shirt from the 94 strike that says "I AM A BASEBALL FAN (with the AM crossed out and a handwritten "was" scrawled above it) -- players and owners should try working a REAL job" which he loved so much he recently had it re-made, this time with the wording embroidered. even tho he's a die-hard lifelong cubs fan, this year he actually wore a cubs hat to a game for the first time i could ever remember.

anyways, back in the day we were sitting at a game and he coined a term for the orie blauser servais trifecta in the cubs lineup: the bermuda triangle.

whenever i see one of those dynamos referenced, i can't help but think of the bermuda triangle.

end of line.

Memo to Omar Vizquel: CHANGE YOUR JERSEY NUMBER for 2011! #11 is supposed to be retired on the South side! What was wrong with #17? There are other numbers you can wear. PUT THE #11 BACK IN MOTHBALLS!

You know, SHARK bitching all year about him wearing #11 is enough to make me hate this signing.

I'm not the only one bitching about Omar Vizquel and the #11. There were guys on The SCORE who also weren't thrilled that Vizquel sported a number THAT'S SUPPOSED TO BE RETIRED for Luis Aparicio. #5 is now available, possibly #12 if Anthony John Pierzynski and Paul Konerko's #14 aren't back next year...By the way, I know Alex Rios flipped the #15 he wore in Toronto to #51 here because Gordon Beckham wears #15 here...Vizquel could've flipped the #13 he wore for years to #31!

He is not wearing #14. Nobody will. That will be retired in 8-10 years.

Frank, you're probably right about #14...

Am I the only one who remembers him bitching about not being able to handle being a bench player before Tehan went down?

Luckily Ozzie will make him this year's overworked veteran.

If Aparacio says it is ok for him wear his number, what does it matter to you then

I don't care what Luis Aparicio says... I had a lot of trouble watching Vizquel wearing a number that is supposed to be retired...
