Tatis Jr seems universally rated as the higher prospect, and he plays a more valuable position where there is a much larger gap between the impact of stars and the impact of 'replacement bats.' Corner outfielders seem easier to sign on team friendly deals...star shortstops are few and far between, and very costly, as the White Sox are finding out.

Could the White Sox have had the next Francisco Lindor, and essentially swapped him out for the next Matt Kemp?

All that matters is Eloy > Quintana.
I like the chances of that playing out in reality.

This thread doesn't make any sense. The mistake was trading Tatis in the first place(Shields). The Padres were not even in buy mode when the Sox were shopping Quintana

Acquiring Shields was a fireable offense, Trading Cease and Eloy for Q was dumb.

I can't confirm or deny that, but baseball fans care about baseball.

Trading for Shields was dumb regardless. But I can't really blame the Sox for trading a 16 year old.

Tatis will be the NL ROY next year and will play short in San Diego for the next eight years at least.

The trade was so bizarre. The Sox were the ones taking on salary and a rapidly declining player.

Exactly. Plus they probably assumed he would end up sucking like just about every other position player to emerge from their farm system in the past two decades.

I've seen them claiming that. They are insane. I don't recall anyone declaring victory. I remember friends, people at work all saying "WTF? You just got out from under the John Danks disaster."

It seems like they kidded themselves that that team was a contender.

And that Coop could straighten him out.

I'll miss marveling at "Big Game" James Shield's box score after getting regularly bombed. 16W-35L 5.31 ERA with Sox. Hahn will have this and Theo's blunders as learning tools.

4.5 ERA last year. 5th starter material. Same as Chatwood's career ERA

probably not

My guess is I said we got him for nothing but it was a bad move after having just rid ourselves of the Danks contract
