He is who he is. After 100-120 starts with the Cubs, his win% will be somewhere between .490-.510. Not that you can't win with a guy like that, but he isn't a stopper or true #1 like Lester has turned out to be.

Nor was he expected to be.

Disagree, but ok.

As far as Palka, he may be a multiple time All Star, Hall of Famer, career back up 4th OF, or out of the game in a year. Nobody knows at this point.

Quintana has never been what JORR or Frank want to pretend he was or is. He is a good pitcher... probably a #3 on a playoff team. He gets credited with more pitcher wins on a good team than he did on a bad team, even though his pitching is more or less the same (slightly worse in the past year than for his career, actually).

Pitcher wins is a team stat. It is one of the most flawed stats in all of baseball.

I don't know how a stat can be "flawed". It's nothing more than a measurement. Pitcher's W/L record is a great stat. It allows us to compare how pitchers actually performed in game context rather than trying to insist that a WHIP compiled pitching in Dodger Stadium is the same as one created pitching in Sox Park. Let's pretend Jake Arrieta's strikeout numbers can just be compared to Chris Sale's when one guy gets to strike out pitchers.

Pitcher W/L allows you to compare the disparity between a team with a really strong offense and a team with a really weak offense. In a world where every pitcher pitched on a team with a Replacement Level offense, Pitcher W/L might mean something. But you bring up an example of how Sale has a harder time getting through a lineup than Arrieta. You are correct. But that doesn't solely apply to NL vs AL. It applies to two separate AL teams. Kansas City has scored 325 runs this season. Boston has scored 512 runs.

When Drew Pomeranz and Danny Duffy match up, do you think they are pitching against each other? Danny Duffy could go 6 IP and give up 3 ER and it would be considered a pretty damn good effort. If Drew Pomeranz gave up 3 ER in 6 IP, it wouldn't be as good.

ORLY? Quintana had a better W-L record when the Sox had the worst offense in the league than he did when the Sox had an offense that was just barely above league average.

In a given game, a starting pitcher (something you failed to grasp just a couple weeks ago) getting the W or L may, at times, be flawed. Over the course of 150+ starts (of which Duffy and Pomeranz are nearly identical), his W-L record tells us exactly who he is.

There's no such thing as "replacement level offense". Offensive numbers are created by hitting off pitchers. If the Cubs faced Max Scherzer every game they would be the worst offense in baseball.

If you're simply saying that there is a lot of "noise" in the W/L record, I don't disagree. That's why a large enough sample is crucial. Just as it is with every other statistic.

If Scherzer faced the Cubs every game he wouldn't be a Top 5 pitcher in baseball. He'd probably be somewhere around a 3.00 ERA...just a guy.

Considering they've batted .195 and slugged .390 against him, I doubt that's the case.
