that time has come and gone. He had his shot with Machado/Harper. That was when he had enough young talent that one star would have made a difference.

There's more roster clarity than there was back then.

Does anyone know what time the parade that Rick Hahn was talking about is scheduled for ?

Hopefully the Ligue family met him in the parking lot.

afaik, selling an asset that's appreciated from $20 million to $2.05 billion would result in the $1.85 billion appreciation being taxed as capital gains. Whereas if Reinsdorf holds on to the asset and passes it to his heirs after his demise, then the heirs would receive the asset with a stepped-up basis -- market value of the asset at the time of Reinsdorf's death. Maybe there have been changes to the rules or there are tax dodges that Jerry could avail himself of, but I think you hold on to the asset at this point until you die and pass it on. The heirs would then be able to sell it and only pay taxes on the difference between market value at the time of Jerry's death and the ultimate sale price.

There's no Manny Machados around. It was the greatest player personnel fuck up of my lifetime. He was a baller.....Now in retrospect, the Padres have the same problem most teams have. Swingers, throwers, and glove wearers. Teach baseball, not exit velocity and spin rate. Yankees' Brian Cashman looks like he's going to lose his job over it. And he should.

Reinsdorf built his fortune on exploiting the tax code. I'm sure he'll come up with one last middle finger.

You sure?

3B, SS, 2B, RF, C are all question marks at this point, and 1B should be looking for an upgrade. Bummer (who sucks) is the only guy in the bullpen who was also there on opening day.

The only clarity with regard to the roster is that it largely sucks.

When I speak of clarity, I mean you know if the players suck or not.

That makes a lot of sense. Hahn seemed completely miserable and ready to be done.

Also seems more than a bit self-serving.

I get that and there is no doubt some self-serving in there. But wouldn't anyone want to have the opportunity to get a future job? That seems like a pretty reasonable concern for a guy.

I agree that it is self serving but JR blocked KW from pursuing other jobs in MLB about a decade ago. These guys become pets to him.

but JR doesn't have the kind of juice across MLB that he used to have

Clarity in the sense that now we know everyone sucks and there's no hope?

Yep! If he was as great of a GM as he was working the media, the Sox would be a winner and he would still be employed.

Who would let someone quit and get another job while under contract in pro sports?

That's the point of a contract. I'm sure Hahn will still collect the paychecks his is owed on that contract too.

I think it's standard when the job is a promotion. Why would you want to keep a person on staff who doesn't want to be there?

Because he can be the fall guy when you rearrange the deck chairs to promote your guys who is in charge of player development who is yet to develop a legit MLB starter.

I don't think it's standard once you get to the top job. That's why Sean Payton had to sit out a year and still the Broncos had to pay the Saints for him. He couldn't just become the GM of the Broncos as a promotion.

They did let Ozzie get a trade setup for him though but I doubt anyone is giving up anything valuable for Rick Hahn.
