Phil Humber pitched a perfect game this year.

Anyone can have a great game.

Coop is going to open a bottle of Goose, drink it, and then break it over your head for that statement.

ERA is overrated and win/loss on a bad team doesn't mean much either. Good pitcher bad situation.

He's a rental that will not be the reason the Sox could wet the bed.

I'm not thrilled with it. I guess he's a guy who will take the ball. At least the Sox don't have to worry about him shutting them out anymore.

A great trade so they can finally fulfill their ambition to put Sale in the pen.

welp, i lost my big long post with my feelings on the matter.... basically, this guy is right there in don cooper's wheelhouse for the type of reclamation/rehab project that he's had a pretty good track record of success with during his storied tenure with <announcer's voice> YOUR CHICAGO WHITE SOXXXXX</announcer's voice>

this year>>
Francisco Liriano (2012): 22g 17gs 3w 10l 0sv 0bsv 1hld 0cg 0sho 100.0ip 89h 63r 59er 12hr 55bb 109k 5.31era 1.44whip .239baa
.
meh. not a bad H/IP ratio there (89/100) but the 55 walks coupled with the 12HRs in 100IP = welcome to a 5.31 ERA. he had a pretty good stretch from mid-may to mid-june i wanna say, but then his inconsistency is his #1 consistency..... while it's easy to look back to his 2006 season where he came up and stormed out of the bullpen to get 14 starts of 2.36/1.00 with !!!! K rates, i think the best-case-scenario with this guy comes from a couple'a years ago:

Francisco Liriano (2010): 31g 31gs 14w 10l 0sv 0bsv 0hld 0cg 0sho 191.2ip 184h 77r 77er 9hr 58bb 201k 3.62era 1.26whip .252baa

that's the kind of performance i'd love to see don cooper sprinkle some of dusty's magic pixie dust to get. ideally, seeing as last year he was something like 4.60/1.40 and in 08/09 he was basically 5.00/1.45 or thereabouts, methinks if he shows some promise/potential during the remainder of this season you should be able to ink him to a relatively cheap 2-4 year contract, which would be ideal. something tells me you can get this guy to fall SOMEWHERE in a 3.50-4.25/1.20-1.30 range, and if you do that you'll get a nice K rate with that to make him a really nice little 3/4 slot pitcher in your rotation going forward.

so yeah, my gut reaction is similar to the contreras trade, but this definitely isn't that one. i was a big fan of the contreras trade at the time because i saw esteban loaiza's mexican pitching record career year as just that, a career year, and being able to spin him for a guy with stuff like contreras who buckled under the pressure of having his WELCOME-TO-MLB inaugeral tour with YOUR 27 TIME WORLD CHAMPION NEW YORK YANKEES (LED BY DEREK. SANDERSON. JETER. ) but came here and was basically just about the best pitcher in baseball from mid-05 to mid-06.... yeah. i doubt this trade will be as significant as that one, seeing sa that one required you giving up a pitcher who had theoretical value and taking on a rather sizable contract in terms of assuming risk, this one basically only really cost you a utility player and a goofy kid who shit the bed after getting the ball from his first MLB pitch and having his 2nd MLB pitch be a resounding stand up double. welcome to the show.

and yeah, my gut tells me that if the sox can teach this kid how to use a cutter and then get some sort of a sweetheart deal for the guy here in chicago you're going to likely end up with a pitcher closer to those 2010 3.62/1.24ish stats and therefore get a really shrewdly-good deal out of the whole works.

terry boers once said that someone, i think it was royko, told him that writing a column is basically flinging a bunch of shit on the wall and seeing what sticks. kenny has a similar mindset when executing these moves to upgrade the white sox, and while there have been spectacular successes in the past (contreras) and there have been spectacular failures too (manny ramirez) i still like this mentality of getting guys who have shown that they can do it at the big league level at some point in their career, well then shit, you know they have it IN them, it's only a matter of getting it OUT of them (again).... so hey, everyone raise your beer to kenny williams because i love this guy's mentality when he smells tiger blood in the water and goes "mmmm hey i know that smell, that's menstrual blood!" and goes out and gets players with legitimate upside for a song and a dance (youk, myers, and now liriano for a combined large value-size bag of potato chips and a liter of pepsi)

rock on k-dub! stay hollywood and keep those crank voicemails to ozzie comin more often than russell brand in a whorehouse! SHOMER SHABBOS! unlike walter sobchak, "hollywood" k-dubbs DOES indeed roll on saturdays!

Sure they can. If a mediocre pitcher like Kerry Wood can do it, how hard can it be?

Is Liriano, on average, better than Axelrod?

Is Liriano, on average, better than some of the pieces of meat in the farm system?

I'm not sure how you can't like the trade. Sure, it's a few month rental for a wildly inconsistent pitcher, but the upside is there; and the cost is a couple of non-prospects.

It's easy to not like the trade. It most likely didnt improve the team at all. Nobody should be really mad because like you said the cost was cheap, but this move shouldn't excite anyone.

Exactly. I'm not sure Liriano is going to give you any more than Axelrod would have and you dumped a good utility infielder who was contributing to the team. It's not like you gave away anything great, but I'm not sure you got better either.

And what exactly are they going to do with Liriano? Are they going to a six-man rotation? Or are they going to a modified five-man where they slip the extra man in here and there to stretch out the days for Peavy, Quintana, and particularly Sale?

I can see that you don't want to kill Sale, as you hope he's your stud guy for several years to come. But I also don't think replacing him in two or three starts with Liriano is going to help you win the division anymore than replacing him with Axelrod would have. At this point I don't want Peavy missing anything. He's not coming back next year and you're never going to get your money out of him. He doesn't rest until the division is clinched- if that ever even happens. If he's burned out for the playoffs, you deal with that thing then. You can't be saving guys and finishing second.

The thing this does more than anything is it gives depth in case Peavy or any of the other guys go down. Liriano has been better of late and sometimes going to a team in contention can make the difference. Also knowing they could get yanked from the rotation if they suck, Floyd and Humber now have some fire under their ass. This is a great trade.

He has been? He has lost his last 3 starts and given up 12 earned runs.

No way in the world this is considered a "great" trade.

That's claptrap. Like the vast majority of starting pitchers in the major leagues, Floyd has good games and bad games. When he's good, he's very good and the chances of him being good in a particular game are better than those of the other two guys. You were trying to make it seem like starting Liriano in that must-win situation was the no-brainer, when in fact, Floyd would be the real no-brainer. People dislike Floyd because he isn't Verlander or Weaver. Guess what? Very few guys are.

You need power arms going up against lineups like the Yankees, Rangers, Angels and Tigers. Liriano is a power left hander that's capable of dominating a game and that's what you need in a big-boy American Legue playoff run. Liriano has been much better over his last 11 starts. His walks are an issue but I think he'll benefit from AJ calling a game more than anything. I love this trade more and more.

That's Liriano's problem. He isn't really a power arm anymore but he still pitches as if he were.

I feel ok being on the same side of a baseball argument as JORR. Even if RFDC is on that same side.

All of you will be embarrassed when Fitzpatrick wins MVP this year, despite McDaniels coordinating a 42 ppg attack in New England.

No way. I'm not a hit it and quit it kinda guy. Fitzpatrick was hurt last year in the games he wasn't awesome in. Mario is gonna be the Reggie to Fitz's Favre next season.

Sale out with "dead arm".

As I said, great trade. I guess some of you smart guys should have waited before responding about this trade.

Quote:
White Sox starting pitcher Chris Sale currently has no next scheduled start. After the White Sox acquired Francisco Liriano in a trade with the Twins, they have been left with six starters. And while it wouldn't be accurate to say Sale is the odd man out, he's going to be the one sitting out for the time being, due to a tired arm.

"Going through a little dead-arm period I guess," said Sale (chicagotribune.com). "Nothing terrible, nothing anyone else doesn't go through. We all feel this is something that's going to benefit us and benefit myself -- a few extra days off so the next couple months we can make a push and get after it."

Sale was previously scheduled to pitch Wednesday, but Jake Peavy has been moved back to Wednesday with Liriano being slotted into the rotation Tuesday. The White Sox haven't given any indication on when Sale might pitch again, though he's not being placed on the disabled list. Keeping that in mind, it seems doubtful he'll miss more than one or maybe two turns.

It isn't overly surprising that Sale's arm is fatigued. The 23-year-old lefty only threw 71 innings last season as a reliever. This is his first professional season as a starting pitcher and he's up to 124 innings pitched. His velocity has dipped of late, too.

Sale made his first All-Star team this season and is 12-3 with a 2.61 ERA, 1.02 WHIP and 114 strikeouts
