Pitchers have bad innings. Sometimes, they even have bad games. Sometimes still, they have multiple bad games.

Quintana has shown he hasn't lost it, as evidenced by his 4 2/3 innings after the debacle in the first.

More than 40% of a change in W/L% (and by extension, winning and losing) can be explained by a change in run support.

Quintana's bad games as exacerbated by his completely inept offense, currently 24th in the league in runs scored.

Yeah he should've pitched last night.

You cannot give up 5 runs in the 1st and then blame an inept offense.

I'm not, I'm saying that the inept offense inflates the perceived rate at which Quintana give up a ton of runs.

Losing pitcher Jose Quintana.

He's a nice 3 on a SOLID team.

Not that it manners to MANY, but Quintana would have had to throw a perfect game to keep the Sox in this one through 9.

Maybe. Maybe the game turns out differently. Pretty deflating when your "ace" gives 5 runs to start the game.

Right. The Sox got one-hit because of the 5 runs scored in the first inning. That makes sense.

I didn't say that. It's wrong to assume the game would always unfold the same way in whatever hypothetical scenario you're imagining though.

Is hypothetical Jose Quintana better than hypothetical Jay Cutler?

 No, he wouldn't have. Now the guy you keep trumpeting as "great" can't be expected to pitch as well as Ervin Santana.

Santana has a .538 career win %.

He threw an awesome game. Tip your cap and move on.

So it takes a perfect game to equal that? Who is the fucking nimrod?

So what would have Quintana have had to do in order to "out-pitch" Ervin Santana today?

I don't know. I can't say where Santana's head is if he isn't staked to a five run lead in the first inning. But it's not crazy to ask your "GREAT" pitcher to shut down a team that might set a league record for strikeouts until your team scores off Ervin Santana. It certainly does not take a perfect game.

Here are opponent batting lines when Santana's offense is ahead or behind that of their opponents:

He's basically the same pitcher regardless of how is offense is performing.

I'm not sure what those games have to do with the one that was played today. Except that Santana probably pitched better than Quintana when they were in the same game.

Looks like Ricky "Raw Deal" Renteria has a lot in common with Robin.

Man Buxton has sure been disappointing in the majors. It was not too long ago that he was the #1 prospect in baseball

Twice they had 1st and 2nd with nobody out and didn't even move a runner up, let alone score.
