If you're not being sarcastic, then you are obviously correct. In theory, the Sox don't have to win a single game this series and still have a fighting chance to at least push a playoff. By the way, was that Tigers game back a few months ago ever made up in a doubleheader, or do we still have that game "if necessary"?

Never assume. It should not even come down to that makeup game against the Tigers, much less game 163.

Sox win the next 2, then win Friday they're in. Simple as that. They control thier own destiny, and if they want anybody to believe that they will do anything except lose to Tampa in 4 games in the ALDS, they need to win 3 games in a row starting tommorow.

While completely plausible, I don't think winning three games in a row now will make more think any more or less about their chances at beating Tampa Bay in the postseason.

I'm not being sarcastic. I said it yesterday at the beginning of this thread. 1 out of 3 should do it. Sure we can win it by being swept but that's 50/50. Probably less considering we face Cliff Lee in game 3 of the Indians series.

The Tiger game will be made up on Monday if we need it.

I guess the one thing I'd worry about is that the Sox will probably face Cliff Lee. He did lose tonight in Boston, so it's not impossible they beat him, but you'd rather not face him of course.

Every pitcher for the Sox is going on 3 days rest too. That's worrisome just because you never know how guys will react to that.

They match up better against Tampa then Boston. 2 games vs. Dice-K = 2 losses.

The Tigers game would be played on Monday the 29th, with game #163 on Tuseday if necessary.

Cliff Lee is scheduled to go on Sunday as of now.

How would they decide if we needed to play Detroit? Would we need to be tied with Minnesota, or within one game?

Simple. If the Twins are a 1/2 game in front or a 1/2 game behind, after Sunday, that game would have to be played. Anything more, either way, you obviously wouldn't have to play it. It can't be an even number game lead cuz the Twins will have played 162. We will have only played 161.

C'mon Shiv. You can't figure that out?

That half game. Sox have that advantage because the Twins have played one more game than them, and they lost that. So if the difference between the Sox and Twins was to down that 1/2 game after Sunday, the Tigers game would have to be played. Sox win that, they win the division. Tigers win that, game 163 happens on Tuesday.

Well, Vazquez will face Cliff Lee on Sunday. Hopefully we don't need that game. Or hopefully we can still afford a loss and force the Tiger game. Shit.

I would not start Javy in a meaningful game again in 2008.

You start him. But you have Richard and Broadway warming up in the bullpen as Javy throws the first pitch of the game.

The Indians will throw Scott Lewis (3-0 1.42 ERA) -a lefty, on Friday. Then have Zach Jackson(1-3 5.96 ERA)-another lefty, pitch on Saturday.Lee will pitch on Sunday. It may very well come down to the make-up game against Detroit if the Sox can't win at least one in Minnesota. Gotta credit the Twins players. They execute very well. They all seem to be fundamentally sound and they put a lot of pressure on the defense and opposing pitchers. The stolen bases, squeeze bunt, hitting consistantly behind runners. This is an easy team to appreciate. The Sox need Buehrle to pitch like the Ace his contract says he is, tomorrow. In any case, this seasons end for the White Sox is not boring....

Fuck off Steve. Nothing made you happier last nite than the final score of that game. And if you say otherwise you're a goddam liar.

But what if the Twins and the Sox have a full game difference between them after Sunday? If that next game is won by the Sox, we're all tied up, and need to force a playoff, right? So, the Twins basically have to be 1.5 games up on us at the "end of regulation" in order for us NOT to play Detroit?

That's correct. With a 1.5 lead, the Twins win.

Gotta a feeling.

Alexei Ramirez is gonna come up big today. He'll have a couple of hits. Maybe 3. One or two of them will be a big homer.

Ramirez strikes me as a guy that comes up big in the big games.

Yesterday was big but today is bigger. He'll make a nice defensive play as well.

Wouldn't surprise me. It's really ironic that on a veteran team such as the Sox, their two kid prodigies (Quentin & Ramirez) have pretty much carried the offensive load all season.

Don't forget about Dye. He's been awesome for most of the year. He's been in a home run slump recently. Average has dipped a little in Septmeber. Not horrible but he's .290 now. He was .305 for a long time.

Beardown, Dye hasn't homered for almost a month now. He's been stuck on 32 homers since about August 28th...

Uh, yeah Shark. That's what Beardown said. If you read his post, he said that Dye has been IN A HOME RUN SLUMP RECENTLY.

That's pretty accurate. I love Griffey but he needs a walker to patrol the outfield. Something tells me Ozzie got the message last night. I don't expect to see Griffey out there in games where it counts anymore.

Right. Everybody knows that. Ozzie knew it. It's out of respect for Griffey that he rolled the dice.

Hopefully Ozzie realized he can't do it and Griffey is out of the line up tonight. I think he will be. I don't think we lost cuz of Griffey. We were gonna lose yesterday even if Anderson was out there.

Elmuhurst Steve mentioned this: We need Buehrle to earn that big contract tonight. Right here. That's what your big money pitcher does. He wins this game tonight.

I don't care if Nick Blackburn is a righthander...Ozzie, stop being stubborn and play Brian Anderson in centerfield tonight at the Metrodome! Even though he homered late in the 9-3 loss, Ken Griffey, Jr.'s best days are behind him. I don't care if the White Sox lead is now a game and a half...PLAY BRIAN ANDERSON!!! :x

Buehrle really scares me. There is no middle ground with him. He'll either be completely unhittable and have a shutout through 7, or he'll have one of those itchy-twitchy games where he gives up 5 runs in the first 2 innings. He's like Rex Grossman in pin stripes.

Buehrle has been more good than bad this year. Should have a few more wins. He's been great, with a few exceptions, in his last 15 starts.

Kid Cairo brings up a valid point about Buehrle, especially in the Metrodome. While Mark pitches quick & throws strikes, he's also been hit hard at that "glorified pool room", as Chet Coppock calls it. If memory serves, #56 actually allowed 7 runs to the Twins' offense in a start I believe last year up there, yet was the winning pitcher in a Sunday night game...

I know. I think Javy gets 11 million per year. Buehrle is 15 million I think. But I've always expected more out of Buehrle.

Actually, a lot of bad to mediocre pitchers are making what Javy makes. That's the rate for average pitchers now.
