Sox probably dont have much real interest in him but they have been connected before.

Cardinals will outbid them. Astros might too.

Jerry doesn't want to pay the tax.

You keep saying this like it's some sort of inside information. He's paid for the Bulls. If he is convinced this will help the team, why would he not for the Sox?

I would love to be wrong, but I know almost for certain his thought process is "only 20, unproven, tax penalty, not worth the money". Not that Kenny or RH actually want the guy that bad, they're more interested in adding veterans for a wild card run this year.

I thought I heard on the Score yesterday that the Sox were thought to be the front-runners. They also supposedly have money to play with due to roll-over from last year (or something along those lines).

That's right. But there is a school of thought in certain CFMB quarters that the Sox aren't rebuilding and they just traded Eaton and Sale because Williams hated them.

The MLB tax threshold is at 195 million dollars. The Sox 2017 payroll is at 111 million. Unless they paid this Cuban free agent 80 million dollars a year!, it would not put them in the tax.

There is a tax on international signings once you go over the limit, as well as additional penalties.

But please continue to tell us how much you know about baseball.

The Sox appear unconcerned with going into a 2 year penalty to sign Robert. I think the odds of him being signed have risen from near zero to about 5% on that news alone.
