I actually like Hawk....or, at least, am used to him. I like Benetti, but it is hard getting used to him.

Yep. People will miss him when he gone . Benetti isn't bad but is about an interesting as the back of a cereal box. Sad day.

If the folks at MLB have any sense of humor, they will assign Mark Wegner to be the home plate umpire for Hawk's last telecast.

So now he will go from taking 81 paychecks a year from Benetti to just 20. It's an improvement, I guess.

I thought there was a story in Spring training that said Hawk said he wanted to keep going until 2020. Maybe he just changed his mind. But it could be a force out.

He's kind of an asshole. But only to his broadcasting partners. He's been a jack ass to Wimpy, DJ and Stone. Other then that, he just became a crazy cracker over the last 5 years or so. But that happens when you hit your 70s.

He's all I've known as a Sox announcer for my entire life. So it's a little sad for me.

Post subject:  Re: He Gone

btw here's the obligatory ~18min "Hawk Harrelson: Memorable Moments" youtube video clip compilation

one fun little thing in there is near the end when they dust off some 90s clips, they go to the one where the sox clinch the division in 1993. after ellis burks catches the last out and everyone runs out on the field to celebrate you see a sportschannel watermark/logo pop up in the lower right corner, which goes to remind you that like.... there was a time when it was customary to not have television/channel logos plastered all over your screen 24/7/365.... and they only put it up there when they decided it was gonna be some kind of memorable moment worth archiving and stuff..... surely they wanted credit for broadcasting it, but you wonder if they also had the foresight to think "hey maybe someday this will remind people that SportsChannel existed" ??

this might quite possibly be the first boilermaker rick post that didnt start an argument.... and it shouldnt. even the hawk haters seem to love to hate the guy, so people will someday realize they miss having that ol punching bag hawkeroo around to slag off once they realize that yelling about benetti is like making fun of a hippo for being fat, you know? =D

You know what I can't stand? The vanilla exchanges and 1950's-type sense of humor between Stone and the new guy. It's like listening to two dorks trying to one up each other.

Yup. The last of a dying breed. Now we're stuck with boring nerds like Kasper and Benetti

You guys are fucking nuts. They just replayed Hawk calling Thome's 500th HR. On his best day, Benetti can't muster up 10% of the enthusiasm that Hawk did for that.

I wonder if Hawk would have driven people quite as crazy if he had stayed in a color-commentary/secondary role. However, Jerry Reinsdorf has been obsessed with making ex-ballplayers do play-by-play, presumably a bad habit he picked up as a New Yorker with Phil Rizzuto and Ralph Kiner doing games. He had Don Drysdale, who also had nothing to do with the Chicago White Sox up to that point, doing play-by-play. He had Early Wynn doing play-by-play. He still has Ed Farmer and Darrin Jackson alternating play-by-play. Sometimes Steve Stone does it -- poorly. It's such a weird little quirk of Jerry's.

Anyway, good riddance to a South Carolinian who played for the Red Sox and Indians. He makes St. Louis's Harry Caray look as authentically Chicago as Mike Royko.

It's a good thing broadcasting is more than showing enthusiasm in an incredibly narrow set of circumstances. Any 2+ minute rant on umpire conspiracies outdoes his best moments combined. Nevermind the stupid anti-stats stuff that he shoehorned into conversations for whatever reason.

I would much rather listen to a character, instead of a stat reciting robot, or a wannabe rockstar who sounds like Kermit the Frog. The guys in the booth aren't teaching me anything, they are just setting the table.

For every umpire rant, there is a bouquet thrown to the umps.

"Stone Pony, this crew has done a magnificent job this series".

This is said more than it is acknowledged. The meltdowns get exposure.

The guys who cite metrics as gospel are just as bad as the guys who completely dismiss them.
