Did they win?

Did they strike anybody out?

Is all the hand ringing justified?

Garcia's rehabbing from a bicep something I think, hasn't pitched yet. McCarthy gave up 3 runs and 10 hits in 6 innings and lost against LAA

If they were still on the team, the White Sox would be undefeated and would have already clinched a playoff spot.

The handwringing needs to be taken up a notch in my opinion.

Not without Aaron Rowand!

Rowand certainly sucked in Spring Training, but he's doing alright so far for Philly. Unfortunately Erstad is much cheaper, and we didn't have to trade anybody to acquire him. Both players have something in common though - they'll both be free agents after this season, and I'd be shocked to see them continue to be healthy this year.

Danks had some tough luck today - going up against one of the most if not THE most dominant pitchers in baseball.

Braves fan here, but some of you guys are starting to sound like Cub fans. Everyone is great when they have them, but when they are gone, you hope for them to suck, sorta dysfunctional.

he had a quality start, nonetheless. the only guys that hit him were minnesota's three toughest outs -- morneau (with the home run, though danks learned from that AB and K'd him on three outside pitches the next time around), mauer, and cuddyer. promising start, in my opinion.

Yeah. If Denks gives up 3 runs in 6 innings every time out he'll have 15+ wins with this Sox line-up. That pencils out to a 4.50 ERA. But guess what guys? That's a good ERA in baseball today. That's what your beloved Freddy Garcia's ERA was last year.

Most people predict the end of the White Sox's chances because of the loss of these two. Garcia was good and a major part of the championship season. McCarthy was hyped but never had a chance or wasn't good enough.

I don't really care how well they do unless they are playing the Sox.

Yes, but I am pretty sure he got a L today. I caught some of the game today and he needs to get his pitch count down and his control could be a concern.

Not going to win many games when they score 1 run. I think you need more then one start in 30 degree weather to gauge a guy. Hell, I hope he does well, then when the sox dont want to pay him, the braves can scoop him up. Good luck this season, guys.

I agree we need to see more games. Obviously. By the way, we scored just 1 run because we were facing the best pitcher in baseball today. Thank God his pitch count was up and we got to see the bullpen to have a chance today. Didn't matter

The offense will be top 5 in baseball. Don't worry about them.

Danks looked really good today. Obviously pumped up early on and the plate was jumping around on him a bit, but if his pitching line is similiar to what it was today, 9 times out of 10 he's gonna get the W.

That's over stating it . His line today was a 4.5 ERA. He's not winning 9 out of 10 with that. That would put him at 27 wins for a full season. Hell, guys with 2.5 ERA's don't win 27.

Plus if he only goes 6 innings with 3 earned runs you're assuming the bullpen will always protect the win.

But we all agree. This type of performance is more then good enough for Danks. He'll struggle some this year however.

If he wins 12 games with a 4.80 ERA I'll be happy this year. With that, he gets some no decisions that we eventualy pull out. That's good enough for a 5th starter assuming our 1-4 pitch to their potential.

that 4.5 is kinda misleading. he hadnt allowed a hit, then 3 in a row..unfortunately the last one was a HR. so one pitch literally changed the game. twins didnt even have any sort of scoring threat outside of that 4th inning.

Whitesox won't go anywhere without D.Marte/D.Hermanson/S.Alomar and the duo of Ed Farmer and Chris Singleton in the booth.

I agree with you. People seem to not want to look at this trade as what it was: an untouchable for an untouchable + relief help. I hope and expect both Danks and Mc Carthy to have good careers as top of the rotation major league starters.

As far as Freddy goes, I think everyone expected him to be gone this offseason. I would not have advocated getting rid of both Mc Carthy and Freddy. KW got lucky, as Denks, by all accounts, was supposed to be in AAA this year. That would have left the Sox with some big question marks for the 5th spot.

All this being said, both Mc Carthy and Denks are one start into a season.

I don't look at this trade as "everything is rosie". What I've been saying all along is "It wasn't neccesarily gonna be rosie with Freddy and Brandon"

Everybody was just assuming that those two were studs. Freddy is fat, losing his fast ball, and overrated last year. Hey look, Fred's on the DL. Don't think Kenny didn't forsee injuries with him and that was part of why he traded him.

We got 4 young guys for our 2 guys. Unloaded Freddy's 11 million so it to help maintain the Sox budget.

Sox have 109 million in value of roster pay roll (4th in MLB in payroll). They're paying only 102 million of that cuz other teams are picking up some.

not necessarily, and not for long. danks has 426 innings pitched in the minors. even if he did start the season there, he wouldn't have ended it there, for either team (tejas or cws)

I did not read a single report going into spring training that had Danks in Chicago this year sucka. Even KW had him in the minors at the time of this deal. They would not have brought him up to be in the bullpen so the only way he was projected to be in Chicago was by injury or suckage.

He won the job in spring training, which is great. However, Floyd really did lose it as much as Danks won it.

i guess i'm going on common managerial sense as opposed to what anyone said or did. letting a legitimate prospect pitch over 500 innings in the minors is a waste of an arm, and if he'd even matched his line (let alone topped it) from AA-AAA last year, they would have given him a spot start here and there by June.

I believe his ERA was over 4 in AA last year.

I know what you mean though. He is a top prospect with sufficient seasoning.

his ERA was over 4 in the PCL and Texas leagues, though, which are notoriously hitter-friendly. i'd argue that his more important stats between AA and AAA are his 9+ K/9 in both leagues (with a 10.64 in 69 IP @ Frisco), as well as slightly worse than average BB/9 rates, which tells me he was challenging hitters rather than pitching to contact.

I've got NO problem the way these trades are panning out. Garcia will probably turn things around, but he's not the stalwart the Phillies thought they were getting.

Granted Danks W-L record is ugly, but this boy is second on the team in strikeouts, and is 11 walks vs. 28 strikeouts and a respectable 4.33 ERA considering his age and inexperience. McCarthy is struggling mightily. 16 walks vs. 16 strikouts. Those are BS pussy ass number if you ask me. I wonder if he's not getting along with the guys in the clubhouse. ;)

The sirons and panic went off on these deals in the off season. I was the sole voice of reason. (others were reasonable about this too)

I had to explain to people that the Sox traded McCarthy because they liked the prospects they were getting better. Plus they got 2 for 1.

Freddy is decent. But he's on the down side of his career.

i didnt mind seeing either of these guys go, i just thought we could have/should have gotten more for garcia. gavin floyd sucks balls.

danks is a rookie 5th starter. considering, i think he's done marvelous. if your #5 guy goes out there and chucks 5-6 solid innings and keeps your team in the game, thats all you can really ask for.

hell, compared to the revolving door that was the 5th starter under the manuel regime (wright, munoz, rauch, biddle, stewart, etc) this guy looks like cy young.

Frank have you seen or heard anything on how Floyd is doing in the minors? I was hoping he'd get himself straight to at least compete next year as a starter or possibly in relief. Good potential but that trade isn't looking too hot right now. Glad to have Gio back though.
