and then didn't

I'm not jumping to the dark side but I cannot believe in my lifetime that the Cubs management would have more accountability than the Sox.

When I heard Kenny literally say, "We were not prepared to go to $300M", you knew they were not serious.

Truth.

The almost universally expected price of poker in this game was $300 million. It ended up being less but they should have been prepared for that number, especially when they were so public in their pursuit.

I said it months ago on this board. Jerry Reinsdorf is not willing to sit at the big boy poker table. And that these reports that the Sox were in it was total bullshit.

And I was absolutely right once again.

This is what doesn't make sense. Machado is getting a 5yr out in that contract. With MAchado, Padres payroll is going to be around $110M, IF the Sox were to of signed him, we would be around $120-$130M.... Roughly, for about 5yrs, you literally do not have to resign anyone. Eloy is going to be a FA is about 7yrs, Moncada maybe in 4-5yrs.

Wait until next year...... Another FA disaster....

And it's one thing to lose to the Red Sox, Yankees or Dodgers, who have always way overspent to get their guy.

You lost to the fucking Padres. Fuck you, Jerry.

Guess what, the Yankees also lost out to the Padres. So Machado was just taking the highest bid no matter which team it was.

Calm down. Spending that much money on position players almost NEVER works out.

ARod was 25 when he signed with the Rangers which basically crippled them.

I just can't bring myself to believe that 300 million dollars couldn't be better spent on a few players than on one who may or may not continue to perform to expectations and probably isn't worth it even if he does.

At this point, Sox fans will gladly trade leash for gd.

Pay five guys $20mil a year for three years and try to win another fucking Championship.

I am very disappointed about this. Like MANY, I really thought we had a shot at Machado coming to the Southside.

They did everything to entice Manny to come here and have a great opportunity. The fanbase is starving for a star of his caliber. In the end, we are shunned again.

This reminds me of Wade, Bosh and LeBron teasing Da Boo a few years ago.

The Padres?!? Yep, this stings.

Nova, Herrera, Alonso and Mc Cann got us to over $30 million per year this off season. They should be equal value to Machado.

I would have been ok if it was equal money and he chose elsewhere. The Sox had the opportunity to match but chose not to. We were sunk by our own leadership.

I dont understand how anyone can truly believe this.

They were not willing to go to the desired amount. There was talks earlier of going after both guys. You can easily go to whatever dollar amount for the guy you want. They are spending very little money currently.

I guess I shouldn't have made such a broad statement. I was referring to the signings of familiar faces in his life. Trying to make Machado's decision more easy.

Fair callout, RFDC.

Regardless of whether it was a good deal, White Sox are still liars.

A-Rod won 3 MVPs in the first 7 years of that contract. The problem with those Rangers teams wasn't they weren't getting enough production out of A-Rod to justify the 22MM he was making per season, the problem was they weren't getting enough production out of the 50-60MM the other 24 shitbags on the roster were making.

Terrible thread, gd.

the White Sox offer to Manny Machado was 8 years 250 million dollars guaranteed. There was a 35 million dollar option for year 9 and a 35 million dollar option for year 10. Those options vested with 550 plate appearances the previous season. the total he could have earned was far more with the White Sox than what he signed for with the Padres, and when you take into account the state income tax that makes it even more lucrative for him to have been a white sock.

In theory, yes. The difference is something like $28M($40M Cali vs $12M IL) for the life of the contract difference between IL and CAL if that is where he is taxed. At 34yrs of age, how many players would hit this 550 PA's? and at 35yrs of age, how many have hit 550 PA's? If you legit thought he was going to hit the escalators, why not just guarantee it? Because Jerry is a cheap piece of shit.

There have only been 19 SS/3B's in the Expansion Era to have at least two 550 PA seasons after the age of 35, and irrespective of position there have been, at most (because I don't have a Play Index subscription anymore so I can only give specifics to a point) 182 players to do it. COULD he be one of those players? Sure, but it's up to him whether he wants to gamble $20 million that he is.

The White Sox gave Machado an expected value proposition. They asked him to put up $20 million (the difference between the money guaranteed by the Sox' and Padres' respective offers) to wager that he'd be good and healthy enough to play full time past the age of 35 (and/or that the Sox would still play him at that point) at 2.5:1 odds, and he decided that wasn't a smart bet. The numbers back him up, and show that the Sox hoped that contract "funny money" would outweigh their low-ball bid.

EDIT: Nightengale is reporting the Sox underbid by $50 million in guaranteed money, not $20 million.

I am really getting tired of some Sox fans on twitter saying "1 player doesn't win you a championship". Eat shit, you piece of shit.
