remember when cubs fans thought schwarber's knee injury would limit his catching ability

Abreu leading Mlb in RBI, gotta resign him to a 3 year deal.

Why? They better worry about re-signing McCann as a first order of business and then figure out what to do with Collins. The intelligent thing to do as I see it is to sign Abreu with a three plus an option year contract. Collins should be brought up in September and start the 2020 season with the big club. He probably needs to play winter ball and try and improve his catching.

I see the kid as a .250 kind of a hitter with 10-15 home-runs and a good on base percentage. He should get maybe 350-375 abs as a back-up catcher/DH/1B combo.

On the international scale of ages (365 days per year), Jose Abreu is likely playing out his age 35 season this season. He has been in decline for 2 seasons now. He definitely won't be able to pull in a big contract, but there are teams that will be able to offer him more than the White Sox do.

Do the White Sox want to pay a sub .800 OPS first baseman with bad defense almost $20M a season?

TIL a .822 OPS is considered a sub .800 OPS by those who consider themselves baseball experts. I guess I have some more learning to do.

He can play a couple more years. Vaughn should be up by 2021. He's hardly their biggest problem at the moment.

Collins is hitting pretty well in AAA as a CATCHER, as a 1B, forget about it.

He's gonna have a big year, I bet he'd take a 3-42 million.. probably the best deal out there for a DH.

I think this is all contingent on the Sox letting Alonso's option vest with the 500 or 550 ABs. IMO, he should be out right let go, and have Collins DH right now. Let's see if he can hit MLB pitching.

Its awful. Abreu leads AL 1st basemen in RBI, and is only one behind the lead in both HRs and hits.

I guess IMU would prefer a guy who walks playing first base rather than a guy who hits bombs and drives in runs.

He is already under contract for this season. We're discussing next season.

Sorry dude, Rizzo has more RBI and more homers over the last four seasons. You might need a better source of information.

Under .800 OPS last season, was under .800 this season as recently as a week ago, then hit a couple home runs and doubles. His next week of normal Abreu performance will have him back in the 7s.

Agreed that he’s under .800 OPS if you just arbitrarily remove a lot his extra base hits. Got me there

I sense a wagering opportunity. He will be above .800 OPS next season if he gets a sufficient amount of PA - like 300-400 or whatever

1. He is not a bad defensive 1B.

2. He has not been any decline for 2 seasons. He is having an all-star season this season.

3. He has not had anyone decent hit behind him for three years now.

4. He is healthy.

5. He will merit a contract of $75M for 3 years with a $20M in performance bonuses.

6. This guy will last another 6 seasons in the major leagues with half as a DH. His bat is amazingly quick.

Edit: I meant that to say $60M for three years to include $20M in performance bonuses.

Just terrible, awful, nonsensical postings from IMU in this thread. Even Caller Bob isnt this stupid.

Abreu's worst career OPS was .798, which came last season. The only season of his career which he did not play in at least 140 games and have 500 at bats.

Not sure how well you'll want him to do next year when he is at 1B or DH for Tampa Bay. Hell, he is likely to be traded there in the next 6 weeks.

I don't expect White Sox fans to be objective on Jose Abreu when there is more than a half decade of proof that you overrate him. Due to him being the lone bright spot during a very dark period. He has hovered above and below an 800 OPS for a season and a half. His rookie year success can barely be seen in the rear view. He now has to sacrifice BA in order to overswing and slug.

Maybe he is a bit overrated. He probably is over loved.

Time will tell. I've been right on Abreu to this point. No one offers the Abreu vs Rizzo bets anymore. :(

Most likely scenario is that the White Sox resign him. They seem to value his veteran leadership, etc. If they do, I'm hoping we're looking a 1 year deal with a option for a 2nd year. It's hard to see a ton of demand for a ~35 year old 1B on the market.

I cannot believe how undervalued Abreu is on this board by some. The guy is a stud and is leading major league baseball in RBIs despite not having a decent 4 hole hitter behind him. Abreu will hit and hit with power until he is 40 years old as a DH. I really hope that they either trade him or give him a real major league contract worthy of his career. He deserves it.

Even a broken clock is correct twice a day. How are Brett Jackson and Carl Edwards doing?

Javy Baez has had one full season with an .800 OPS. I guess you're ready to put him out to pasture to, huh?

Post subject:  Re: Does Zack Collins start at 1B next year?

The Sox got a catcher out of the Rule 5 draft a couple of years ago, Mercedes out of the D.R. All the guy does is hit and hit with power. He's hitting .345 at Birmingham. He also has a good percentage in throwing out runners. Over 40+ %. I like to see some of these guys who got signed very early(17 years old) and who have battled through the minors and have been successful get at least a chance to make it. It sends a good message throughout a farm system to young players not to give up on themselves.
