Offers Jose a 1yr 17.8M deal has 10 days to accept, and has a pick attached if signed by another team.

Further proof, they are not serious about spending money. Explains why they didn't wanna lock him up last season. I would of offered him a 3yr deal.

They have to make the qualifying offer. I'm going to say he ends up signing a two or three year deal with the Sox.

I'd give Abreu a 3 year 40 million deal. He's earned it and he'll hit for 2.5-3 more years.

We'll see. I highly doubt that Reinsdorf is going to let his favorite player since Harold Baines walk. If they were going to do that they should have traded him last July. I think Hahn was specifically told he could not trade Abreu.

Lot of money on a post 30 first baseman. This team.needs at least 2 quality starters and a couple bullpen arms just to hope to be competitive.

I'd target Odorizzi and Wheeler, bring up Madrigal and Robert.

I'd like to see where the market for Bumgarner goes.

JOrr is correct. Teams have to make a qualifying offer. Its not a final offer from the Sox by any means. Its only a qualifying offer in that if the player says no and then signs elsewhere, then the team gets compensatory draft pick. The risk is that if its a medicore or injured player and the team is just banking on that draft pick, the player can easily sign the 1 year tender and collect for the following year.

I.E. The Cubs will not get such a pick if/when Cole Hamels signs elsewhere because they did not make him a qualifying offer. Same with the Yankees and Gregorious.

I am not disagreeing with the QO, my gripe is with not offering him a contract during the season. I don't think they have any intention in keeping him, they want the pick.

I think they absolutely want to keep him and am not worried about them not getting a deal done during the season.

There were a lot of teams who could have used a right-handed power bat for the stretch drive. I'm sure the Sox could have gotten something more valuable than that pick if the idea were to let him go.

Abreu is not going anywhere. Market not that good for a guy of his age and position. Cubs smart not to offer Hamels QO. He would have taken that deal and run to the bank. Nobody will come close to giving him that much a year.

I think that he'd be perfect for this team.

Bumgarner ain’t coming here. Be happy he’s not. There’s a lot of miles on that arm.

Yeah.. Madbum been pitching a majority of his games in SF, Petco and Dodger stadium ( all pitcher parks) he'd get smoked in the AL and in a hitters park now that he's lost some velocity.

Abreu will be back surprising no one.

I wonder however if the Sox shock the world and convince Carl Edwards Jr. to join the team!

:D

Mercedes should make the team next season as a catcher/DH/1B. He's not being mentioned much by the reporters and analysts but this guy can flat out hit and hit with power. Collins is not a catcher and has to hit to make the team as a 1B/DH.

Yeah. Abreu will be resigned unless he gets really greedy which I doubt. He's coming off of a terrific year, is still in his prime and can flat out hit.
