I'm watching a random 2019 Sox game tonight on my MLB.tv subscription. (First game of the Astros-Sox August DH where Cease got fucked by the home plate ump and Castillo kept on giving up passed balls.)

But I had a thought - if the games start in June for example are Farmio's doctors going to let him come back? If he doesn't get infected, which I hope he doesn't, he has enough health challenges that I can't see anyone wanting him to travel. Maybe home games.

No, I think it's the end of the road for Farmio. We know that 720 didn't even want him there in the first place.

I can't even remember who the play-by-play radio announcer was before Farmer and I respect the longevity, but he's pretty rough. I really hope they get a new voice in there that coherently explains what is happening in front of him.

I think that Andy Mazur is still at WGN, I know he also sat in for Jason when he had ESPN college football obligations. He's middle of the road competent for a year or two until they figure out if WGN is going to keep the rights.

I agree, he's fine. Also, just from the standpoint of explaining what is actually going on in the game, he's an improvement over Farmer. However, he's a little too vanilla for a long term role.

They need to throw buckets of money and a lifetime supply of Italian Beef at Dave Wills and Andy Freed down in Tampa when their contracts run out. I listen to a lot of the first hour of 7pm Rays games, more now that their AAA team is my local team, and they are really good.

Dave Wills was great when he was on 1000, but he's been in Florida so long, I don't know if he wants to come back. I went to a Durham Bulls game a few years ago. Their pitcher had a no hitter going into the ninth, but was lifted after one out. The crowd booed their manager mercilessly.

Always liked him and DJ. Too bad he's had the health problems which have clearly led to a decline in his broadcasting.

The great John Rooney, now doing radio in St. Louis.

Andy Masur is technically sound but he's a Cubs guy. If Sox fans didn't like downstater Chris Rongey in the booth, they should have no patience for Andy Masur.

One thing about this board . . . a bunch of us love Dave Wills. He'd be a good choice, and he's as local as Farmio.

I remember Farmer and Rooney, but forgot Rooney was the play-by-play guy. Who called the games on the radio before those two?

Wayne Hagin was there before Farmer. Steve Dahl used to poke good natured fun at them because they sounded so much alike in broadcaster voice.

Rooney and Wayne Hagin for a while

Then it was Singleton and Farmio for a while?

Holy shit. I was literally just thinking about this! They did sound alike, too.

Who was the one guy in the early 80s who always mentioned Mount Carmel High School? I think my dad went to school with him....can't remember his name, though. Bernie Lincicome once asked in a column if he could limit the number of Mount Carmel shoutouts to two a game

Farmer and Singleton were the original Score team in '06, Rooney left for the Cardinals when the Sox left 1000. Singleton was greener than grass and Farmer didn't seem to be of much help. Then days before the 2008 season started (as in maybe two if not one), Singleton somehow failed up to doing TV for ESPN and the Sox/670 pulled Steve Stone off the shelf to do radio for a year, which Dan Bernstein beat off to that entire summer. Then they moved Stoney to TV and Deej to radio for '09 and here we are, more or less.

The strangest thing in all of this is that Chris Singleton actually turned out to be really good on national games.

Having Boog Sciambi as a partner helps.

For sure.

I think he went to the Yankees after he left here.

One thing I will say in favor of Farmio's awful play-by-play was that it was kinda cool that the Sox had not only an ex-Sock but a South Side Catholic school blowhard doing the call. It was provincial in all the best ways. There was always the chance that he'd start telling a story about how he almost got in a fight at a bar but didn't. I've always said that of the two ex-jocks in over their heads on White Sox play-by-play, at least Farmer was the authentic one, Hawk was just a hired gun who tried his whole hayseed act in New York but couldn't get it over.

At this point, I think Farmio knows Southern California better than the South Side.

Great clip from 1980 here, one that I remember watching as a kid: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ewo7LtHFtV0

Wow. I thought for sure that last night's news was an April Fool's thing.

He was completely misused as a pbp guy, but he seemed like a nice guy. RIP

Ed Farmer was a great guy who gave this kid a phone call during his All Star season 40 years ago. They don’t make them like him anymore.
