First I'd heard of it. I have Dye on my fantasy team, so I was hoping SOMETHING would happen with him. Do you want Abreu on your team? He'd add speed, but he's having an off year offensively and in the field.
Thoughts from the devout?

I'd rather have young cheap talent for Dye, than an overpriced contract.

What's Abreau's contract situation? Is he locked up past this season? If not then I wouldn't do it.

I'm very aware that the Sox are not going to resign Dye. Nor should they. He's gonna get a 4 year deal at 14 million per year probably. He's in is mid 30's.

Only contending teams would trade for him this year. Not many would offer MLB talent. Abreau might be the best MLB guy you could get. I'd rather see them get a stud bullpen guy and kids. But I don't think contending teams are gonna give up bullpen guys if they are good. Unless they're offense really sucks and they think that offense is more needed then the pen guy obviously.

Yeah, I don't see much difference between the two except Dye is a little better. I agree with getting young talent, otherwise what's the point?

I don't know Abreu's contract status, but the early returns from the devout seem to say no.

Yeah. Ya know. Even if he's locked up I don't want him. He was a steroid guy that has lost it since the testing. His defense sucks.

If you're close in a month then keep Dye and just lose him next year. If you are 6 games out or more trade Dye for kids. I won't be mad or call it a white flag trade. That will be enough time to see what this team is.

Abreu's contract was originally 5 years/64 M in 2002. He has an option for 16 Million option for 2008.

Thanks. HE has the option? Jeez, I wonder if he'll activate that clause and suck up another 16M or if he'll test the FA waters and get an incentive laden 2M base contract. Decisions, decisions.

Holy shit. The Yankees would have to eat 6 million of that next year salary for Kenny to even consider that then. Plus eat some of this years salary as well. The Yankees would do that. They print money.

I would keep Dye. Abreu hasn't been the same since they started testing. I want the WS MVP or a top prospect or two.

I'm with you, Nas. As I said before I would rather see Thome shipped off somewhere than Dye, even if the right fielder has slowed down a bit over th epast two years.

The White Sox are all about cost certainity so if they were able to get a player that is locked into a reasonable contract, I don't doubt they may consider something like that, but it's too early right now.

Looks like it's all for naught as is the way with most rumored deals. This from Rotoworld this morning.

According to the New York Daily News, the White Sox are not interested in a rumored Jermaine Dye-for-Bobby Abreu trade.
The newspaper reports that Yankees general manager Brian Cashman pursued the rumored trade Monday, but White Sox general manager Kenny Williams "expressed no interest in swapping outfielders."

It's pretty simple why. Ever since he won the HR derby a few years back, Abreu's swing has never been the same.

Not only that but I doubt Kenny is interested in another lefty at the plate that strikes out +130 times a year.

This is from Yahoo rumors:
"The Chicago White Sox were "heavily" considering a Jermaine Dye-for-Bobby Abreu trade about 10 to 14 days ago, according to one rival executive, but the talks never got serious between the White Sox and the New York Yankees, another major-league source says."

How can you "heavily" consider a trade, but never have "serious" talks with the other team?

You just don't talk to the other team.

It means that Yahoo has no idea what they are talking about.

Yeah. Once I learned of Abreau's contract this trade made absolutly no sense.

We're gonna be in this thing until the end. Just keep Dye and lose him at the end of the year. That's just what we're gonna have to do.

The PBA restructured the A and B tier levels for compensation picks, but I think it still includes production for the duration of a player's previous contract. Given Dye's career year in 2006, I believe he would be a candidate for two B-level compensation picks, which would be more valuable than Abreu + cash. The Yankees are tipping their hand as it is, re: their prospects, as most of them are pitchers, and most of them -- aside from the injured Phil Hughes -- aren't living up to the hype with the big club. They've got an interesting speed guy in Andy Gardner, but he'd be a wash with Jerry Owens in the lineup, and he's a smaller, lighter hitter than Owens.

Also, re: Thome, I'd like to see him healthy, not dealt. Thome's the ideal DH for a team lacking much left-handed pop, and I'd honestly like to know who you (Uggie) would realistically rather have in that spot. In the system, there's the recently acquired Craig Wilson (R/R), who makes the other candidate, Casey Rogowski(L/L), look like G.H. Ruth. Rogowski's still relatively young for a hitter of his type and build at 26, and his contract is up this year. I think the Sox would be wise to re-sign him, but he is by no means a legitimate fix.

I was merely stating that in a choice between Dye and Thome being dealt, I would rather keep Dye. I am not questioning Thome's ability to produce, however he only has 3 effective years remaining in his aging slugger's frame.

I would not mind having Dye as our DH, despite his better-than-average arm in the field.
