He would seem to have been the perfect replacement in the radio booth. South side guy with experience in playing and coaching. He's worked his way up in the industry including Sox pre and post. He's perfected his voice in a smaller market for 15 years with the Rays. I think this would be his dream job and he would have jumped at it. He's also at an appropriate age where he could have held the position for a decade or more.

He was both a voice of the fan but also wasn't afraid to tell meatball when they were being dopey.

Nope. Wills and Andy Freed are the best duo on the radio side today. Good mix of analysis, meatball, and laughter.

Maybe he just prefers Tampa to Chicago. Also, he might have children in school down there and he doesn't want to disrupt their lives.

Who cares?

Yes there will be some SABR talk and music gab, but calling the game on the radio is a lot different. Not as much downtime as on TV people can actually see a play develop.

Len and Benetti are basically the same person. Same sabermetric love, same referential humor from all the same cultural touchstones. The Sox may as well bring Connor McKnight back into the mix and hit the English Major With Stat-Geek Affectation trifecta.

This also makes it possible for Benetti to get a bigger role with ESPN/ABC. Either on the college football or basketball, NBA PBP, or as an eventual replacement for Sunday Night Baseball. They can always slide Len over for Sunday day games on TV, especially if Saturday games are on Fox.

Baseball isn't even Benetti's best sport, he's much better at basketball PBP.

Benetti with Robbie Hummel is my favorite NCAA pairing. I get that perfect balance of Purdue love with a great pbp voice

Reinsdorf seems to enjoy fucking with the Cubs. This feels like part of that general trend. Bad blood dating back to Harry Caray.
