Ever since Bernstein took issue with that term I always make sure to say it. Maybe I'll go into the video chat today and try to get a rise out of him. I don't know why it bothers people so much. When a person is a big fan of a team they naturally identify themselves with that team/front office/ownership thus the feeling of a "we". It's natural with a fan. |

It's natural with a fan. This has always bothered me immensely, even before Li'L Danny BernSTEIN Jr. brought this up, or my charter membership into the The Boers & Bernstein Sycophant Society. It's very simple - you're not on the team. My criteria is you only get to use we if you are or were an employee of the team. For fans of college teams, it becomes a little more relaxed; present students and alumni only are allowed to use it, toothless townies cannot. And when I finally take over things in a swift and bloody coup, this will be one of the first laws I enact in my position as lord and tryrant. |

I didn't have an opinion on this before, but now that I know Bernstein hates it...i'll start using it. If it's ok for students at a school to use "we", why shouldn't residents of a team's city be able to do the same? You earn the right to say "we" when you have to defend you shitty teams to people when you go out of town...people are always asking you stupid questions about your city's teams as if your the owner or something. If "WE" lost, then "WE" won |

In most cases though, donations to the athletic department come from alumni(unless you are Notre Dame). |

I believe the word you're looking for is "alumnus"....otherwise, your right. I think most of his problems occurred while he was a Hawkeye if I remember correctly....I have gotten my Pierre Pierce newsletter yet this month, so I could be wrong. |

You are correct. Any major problems happened at Iowa. It's really a sad story because he had amazing potential. I expected him to be in an NBA jersey at this point. |

Or buying jersies, shirts, hats, beer at the park, parking, 3 hours 5 nights a week watching *your* team for 6 months a year, listening to hours of talk radio every day on said team, etc. I do all of this with the White Sox and have gone through the few highs and many lows with them for 20+ years. I have a vested interest in this team for many reasons financially and emotionally. When they win, "we" won. |

In my opinion, buying tickets to anything is like buying any other service. I don't have a vested interest for General Motors to do well because I own a GM car. I would have a vested interest if I owned stock. I just think it takes it to a different level of support when you are willing to monetarily support something that you do not get a direct benefit out of it. If I donated to breast cancer research, I could say that I am helping to fight breast cancer. If I donate to my university, I am supporting the university. There is no way to donate money to professional sports franchises so that type of support is impossible. It's all opinion, but when you buy a ticket to a baseball game, it goes to the rich owners to line the pockets. When you donate to a college, you are helping financially support the athletic departments, including many sports that wouldn't exist if they had to financially support themselves. There are no owners rolling in dough. Buying tickets to college events is a gray area in my definition, but I see my ticket purchases as being a benefit that I am receiving(and the IRS agrees). One of the reasons that I love college sports, even though the talent level isn't as good, is that it at least seems to have less greedy intentions that the professional counterparts. I am not naive enough to believe that to be 100% true though. |

I am not naive enough to believe that to be 100% true though. Sure that money goes partly into the owners pockets, but when a big trade or free agent signing is made, fans usually speak with their wallets and will buy more season tickets and even regular season tickets. Just because they did it afterwards doesn't mean they aren't financially supporting the team or, in their minds the players themselves. I understand the reference to a car but IMO it's completely different. You don't spend days after days cheering for your car and contemplating moves and decisions of Ford. You just make payments, hope it runs well, and maybe enjoy driving it. Hell, I have a pretty big time (but no financial) interest in this message board and think it's more than fair to call it "we" as in "we are a bunch of pants around the ankles cretins". After the Sox won the World Series, Buehrle thanked the fans many times and stated that it was the best feeling he's had in his entire life. For many Sox fans it was the same or similar. There is reciprocation for both sides which creates a legitimate *we*. |

hawkeye, I can't argue with anything you have to say. Maybe my opinion on professional sports and the motivation behind it and I am a little naive about the real goal of college athletics. I'll agree that the White Sox winning the championship was a great moment and time period. I have rarely been as excited watching a sporting event as I was when Hester returned the TD in the super bowl. The Bulls championship run is what turned me into a sports fan. I, however, feel a much larger connection to Purdue football and basketball as compared to any of those other sports. The highlight of my sports life would probably be a national championship in football(not likely) or basketball(more likely) by the Boilermakers. When I refer to Purdue as "we" it comes partly from knowing players in college, meeting coaches, and being in an environment of a collective community with a common goal. I guess that some people could feel this same connection to a professional sports team, especially if they are a season ticket holder. I guess it is all about perspective. Now Hawkeye, a question for you. Would you trade a Bears(or White Sox if that is your favorite pro team) championship for a Hawkeye football championship? I know I'd take a Purdue championship over any pro team. |

I don't think it's a big deal to say "we" when it comes to your team. Bernsie sometimes says to the caller "do you play on the team?" No Bernsie. I don't play for the team. I realize that. Saying we just means you care and have an interest in the team. It doesn't make you a meat ball. It's no big deal and nobody should have a problem with it. |

I never have called into B&B. Just using a random example. |

It was a joke anyways, since B&B seem to believe most of their listeners are meatballs. |

Not even close. For me a White Sox WS victory is the pinnacle of all sporting accomplishments. The playoff run, WS victory night, and weeks afterward were perfect no matter what bad happened. I would really enjoy the moment if the Hawkeyes or Bears won, but the lingering effect would wear off much quicker. Hell, I'm still riding high from 2005 even now that the team is terrible. Second for me would be the Hawkeyes and a distant 3rd are the Bears. This is probably because I was only in Iowa for 4 years and have stronger ties to Chicago but I just prefer baseball and specifically the Sox and their organization to anything else. |
