I thought AJ signed a 3 year extension through 2008.

If they sign Mark B, I still think they could trade Garland then. He would bring more then Buerhle. IMO

Doesn't Garland have a no-trade clause and 1.5 years remaining?

The no trade was for the first year only.

The Score is reporting that a deal is close.

ESPN 1000 is saying that the agent says there hasn't been any new talk, and no deal is close.

Who do you believe ?

Jesse Rogers/George Ofman vs Bruce Levine

Please please please be true. I really hope they keep him. If they keep him, Vazquez, Garland, and Danks they can move Contreras (provided they get good value in return) and put Massett or Haeger into the rotation without much of a loss. They better not have gotten my hopes up on this for nothing though. I think he wants to stay here.

I assume Buehrle is willing to sign for less than 5 years and that KW has a willing taker for Contrearas or Vazquez.

That would have to be the favorite prediction. I don't see any other options that would allow Buerhle to stay in Chicago.

It has to be Contreras then. KW is in love with that guy and just signed him 6 months ago. Plus he's not 64 years old like Jose who also has a great track record in playoff/WS games from 2005. He'd be valuable to a contender.

Contreras has been linked to the Mets for the few days....Obviously, we won't get a whole lot in return, but my main objective would be getting rid of the contract.

Next year, we hopefully will have Buerhle, Garland (he needs to be extended as well), Vazquez, Denks, and then open competition between Masset, Gonzalez, and Floyd for the 5th spot.

Hopefully, they can move Contreras, Dye, and Iguchi and get 2 or 3 guys who can be part of the club's future.

They'll be lucky to get a bag of balls for Iguchi at this point but I hope they prove me wrong. Dye is a toss up though because if/when he comes back healthy he can be such a great player. He just got sooo old so quick in 6 months who knows what offers they'll get for him. Any word on how long he's out for?

What's the chance they wanted to sign and trade him for more value? Not a Sox fan, but I think he should stay in Chicago. One of the few WhiteSox I like.

There'd be no reason to do that if he signed for a hometown discount.

I imagine Joe Cowley would not have stuck his neck so far out on this one without it being well founded.

The Tribune (chicagosports.com) is corroborating this story as well.

Update: Maybe some Sox movement on Buehrle

By Mark Gonzales, 2:34 p.m.

The White Sox have dispatched assistant general manager Rick Hahn to St. Petersburg. It's safe to say he's not going to work on his tan, especially with Mark Buehrle's agent, Jeff Berry, here.

Hahn is general manager Kenny Williams' right-hand financial man and works on every major league contract for the Sox, including the $4.94 million contract for Joe Crede that prevented an arbitration showdown with agent Scott Boras.

Berry and Williams haven't spoken recently, but that wouldn't prevent a deal.

Dye may come back on Friday. I agree that you won't get a ton for any of them, but I'm just hoping for a few possible players who could contribute.

Okay that's not bad then. If he gets hot for a couple of weeks before the deadline he'll help the Sox win (who knows maybe they have a wild card shot) and increase his value right before the trade deadline. I'm still itchy on this Buehrle signing until it's official. Make it happen Kenny!!!

This could end up being a bad report by the Score. Sort of like Bruce Levine's mess-up in spring training that Joe Cowley spent days ripping in the papers. Now, could the shoe be on the other foot ?

I would agree, but the score ha to have some inside info on the sox, unless they pissed someone off and they are trying to make them look bad.

4 years/$56 million and Kenny won't do it because Buehrle wants a no trade claus. Come on Kenny, you're going to let him walk and instead of paying an established, top of the rotation, legitmate, winning, big league pitcher in his prime, $14mil/yr in 2009 & 2010, you'll go sign a sub .500 free agent pitcher like a Zach Duke for 15 million/year.

buehrle is gonna be a 10-5 (10 years in the bigs, 5 with same team) guy in 2010, so its really only 2 years that he needs the no trade claused. once 2010 hits, he has his own clause

If the sox can go from first in 2005 to missing the playoffs in 2006 to fourth place in the division in 2007 then I think giving Buehrle "a no trade clause" will not set back the team any further.

I cannot believe that it is only coming down to a no trade clause. There must be something else. Otherwise it sounds like an absolute steal for the Sox.

If the guy is giving you a hometown discount, of course he is going to need to have a no-trade clause in there. He is taking less than market value in order to stay in a place where he wants to be. Without the no-trade clause, he could get traded away next week and wind up someplace that he does not want to be (NY or LA) and still be making less money. Doubly screwed.

I don't understand why Reinsdorf is willing to show blind loyalty to some guys:

- Frank Thomas - had the balls to complain about his contract after several years of fat, injured, unproductive years circa 2002 but Reinsdorf took it and kept him around.
- Harold Baines - what is this fucking slug bringing to the table year after year?
- Scottie Pippen - brought him back a second time and paid him $12M or something like that even though he was clealy washed up and not really the kind of guy you want mentoring your young players
- Jay Williams - the "dangerous activities" clause is in the contract for a reason. Williams blatantly disobeyed it. It should have been enforced. His stupidity caused him to be a wasted draft pick and, unnecessarily, a waste of money.

Then you have a guy like Buerhle who actually deserves to be shown some loyalty and the White Sox pull this bullshit.
