Went to the game last night with some buddies, as follows is my traditional in game report.

1. Did not see any d-bags in LaRussa Sox jerseys like I did last year, I think we can all assume that person is serving time for some violent felony.

2. Did see a Ventura jersey, which is cool, Robin had a boarderline HOF career and was the best Sox manager since Terry Bevington.

3. That ball that Bergman hit still hasn’t landed, and Bergman sucks.

4. I think the stats would say something like you have a 90% chance to win if your teams scores at least three runs in one inning, which the Sox did. Not sure what the exact stats are for win probability if you give up 10 runs in an inning, but it has to be close to zero percent.

5. Sweet Tony should be charged with crimes against humanity for leaving Giolito in there to continue pitching in the 6th inning.

6. Much like one of my prior in game reports, maybe it was from Game five last year of the ALDS, the Sox just refuse to get extra base hits. Only two last night, this is not a good strategy.

7. Also the Sox “comeback” was muted by virtue of getting no hit by a clown car full of shitty relievers over the last three innings.

8. I thought Tanner Banks was John Danks for a second there when he was giving up missiles.

Will likely go to the game today if I can shake this hangover in the next few hours. Willing to meet up with any peeps for some beers while wearing Beckham jerseys.

One post is good enough. No need for multiple posts in this thread.

Well, now that I've received the in game report, I can officially place last night's contest into the L column. The drama going into today's game, is whether or not someone will take up our correspondent on the beer offer. I think he's 0 for 2 heading into today.

Before the HoF caved and let in Ron Santo....the #1 argument from the Cub meatballs was "Santo dominated his position for most of his career."

I usually replied with...."True.....I also believe Robin Ventura dominated 3B for most of his career. Does he belong in the HoF"?

Crickets.

And again, don't think Ventura is all that far away from a HoF player. But if you want to equate dominating a position to something as unscientific, but also somewhat illustrative, Ventura made 2 All Star teams in his 16 year career and Santo made 9 in his 15 year career. So I'm not sure that Ventura has the same dominance, that Santo did.

Very similar career numbers. Santo played more games so slightly higher totals. https://stathead.com/baseball/player-co ... &request=1

Identical OBP.

Tougher to do in Santo's time to be fair. But the modern reverence for the walk is undoubtedly what got Santo in.

It’s reflected in the WAR. I never saw Santo. Ventura was a very good. Never thought Hall of Fame.

Seems crazy to me that Santo had 67 triples in his career. Was he pretty fast as a young guy?

Not really, but you have to remember how big most of the parks were. Today Wrigley is neutral at best and skews favorable to pitchers. In Santo's day it was considered a hitter's paradise.

Exactly how I viewed Santo. He was the best player on teams that did jack shit...including one team that showcased one of the greatest meltdowns in MLB history.
Santo was awesome, but HoF awesome. If you have to spend years debating whether someone is HoF worthy or not....it's pretty clear he's NOT. Harold Baines isn't either, but that's not the point here.

Bob....go ahead and search my posts in the Cub section. I don't hate the Cubs...I always cheer for them. I only hate NY and Boston teams.

Mostly due to all day games. I think the dimensions are neutral overall but harmful to triples and beneficial to doubles. And of course, the wind...

I don't think you can point to one thing getting Santo in. There were a bunch:

1. Modern valuation of walks

2. Historical realization that hitting in the 1960s was impossible (to this point, Ventura and Santo have almost negligible differences in raw OPS, but Santo has a 10% better OPS+)

3. More nuanced understanding of both raw defensive value and defensive value at the 3b position

4. Relative dearth of 3b guys in the HOF.
